Northern League Cup Round 1

18 September 2007

Spennymoor Town 4 : Bishop Auckland 1

Team:  Stuart Trotter, Shaun Boynton, Michael Hillary, Paul Crager, Jason Newall, Scott Richards, Joe Fairish, Paul Harvey, Dane Wilson, Daryll Evans (Robert Clarkson 45 mins), Dale Mendum (Robert Stewart 45 mins)

Bishops lost at the Brewery Field for a second time this season in a game which followed the same pattern as the encounter back in August.  Both teams featured weakened sides, but Bishops was of necessity as Porter, Parkin, Griffith and Stewart were all either injured, ill or unavailable.

In the opening few minutes Bishops created a couple of half chances, but it was the Moors who almost grabbed the lead on eight minutes when an error by Boynton allowed a shot which flew across rather than into the goal.

On 13 minutes a long throw from Harvey was flicked on by Evans to Crager who headed straight at the ‘keeper from point blank range.   Ex-Bishop Clough made an awful mistake on 30 minutes gifting the ball to Fairish who crossed for Richards to fire a foot wide of the upright.

Bishops were harshly punished after a good tackle from Crager, and the resulting free-kick was knocked in for ex-Bishop Robinson to grab the opening goal on 43 minutes.

The Two Blues team was further weakened with the departure of Wilson and Mendum at half time, replaced by Rob Clarkson and Robert Stewart.  A second goal was added by the franchise on 49 minutes.

Bishops should have been back in the game on 58 minutes when Boynton crossed and Stewart headed against the bar from four yards with the goal at his mercy.

As time progressed, the match broke down into an end to end affair, as Bishops and Moors pressed on, but it was Moors who finished the contest on 79 minutes when Matt Richardson scored.  Clarkson crossed for Evans to chest the ball down and finish well on 80 minutes to make the score 3-1.

The home side fired another goal down the hill after 90 minutes to make the scoreline a flattering 4-1.
