Evans, Dominic Gamble
Bishops went into this vital FA
Vase home tie with Winterton Rangers without any recognised forwards, but at
least with Bryan Stewart making his return to the side, and also bolstered by
new signing Dominic Gamble from Billingham Synthonia.
Winterton were making their third
visit to the North East in three weeks, having played Ryton and
Bishops made a dream start on
five minutes when Daryll Evans capitalised on an error from Winterton skipper
Robinson to blast the ball in from 25 yards over the ‘keeper.
However, it was downhill from
there in what turned out to be an abject defensive display. Northern looked yards
offside when he collected the ball in acres of space behind the Bishops defence
and shot home on seven minutes to make it 1-1. Winterton would have been ahead but for a
good save by Porter from Holt a minute later.
Bishops were unlucky not to
retake the lead on eight minutes when, with the ‘keeper beaten both Gamble then
Stewart saw shots cleared off the line.
Hillary failed to deal with the
high ball on 12 minutes, presenting the chance to Holt to fire low to make it
2-1.
The third came five minutes later
when a Whitehouse free-kick hit Porter’s chest and rebounded to Northern. Porter tipped the follow up onto the face of
the crossbar, but Holt was on hand to head home the second rebound to make it
3-1.
After that crazy start, the game
settled down with Winterton missing one more good chance and Crager having a
shot blocked inside the six yard box before the interval.
Any chances of Bishops getting
back into the game collapsed on 48 minutes when Boynton gave the ball away to
Clarke who fired in low and hard to make it 4-1.
The afternoon got worse for
Boynton on 53 minutes when a brutal tackle left him needing to be carried off
the pitch, to be replaced by Winter a minute
later. The offender managed to get away
with a brief chat with the referee for the offence.
Joe Fairish almost his goalscoring
duck when he intercepted a weak back header, but his headed attempt bounced
inches wide of the post.
Stewart was in the right place in
the box to latch onto a stray ball on 73 minutes and fired home to give Bishops
some hope at 4-2 on 73 minutes.
However, the home side were
unable make any further inroads in the remaining minutes. The closest either side came to a goal was
when Porter spilled a simple shot, but recovered to flap the ball off the line.
