Bishops put in a
second rate performance to crash out of the Vase at second division Marske
United. The visitors defence was as
leaky as the clubhouse roof in the second half, and Marske ran out comfortable
winners.
A beautiful sunny
day at the seaside, and it was the home side who made the early running. On 13 minutes Porter pulled off a fantastic
flying save to push a long range shot just past the post.
In the 14th
minute the referee allowed a Marske midfielder to get away with a crunching
tackle from behind and seconds later gave Paul Moss a yellow for the lightest
of leans. The stage was set.
Gavin Parkin had a
close range chance on 20 minutes but his shot was blocked by a defender. The
resulting corner came to nothing.
Former Bishops
player Dane Wilson almost gave Marske the lead on 27 minutes when he found
space at the far post at a set piece but his header from a tight angle was
pushed round the post.
Against the run of
play, Bishops took the lead when Moss powered in an Ellison corner for a fine
headed goal.
Marske should have
levelled on 40 minutes when Porter was forced to come out and dive at a forward’s
feet. The front man evaded the ‘keeper
but his lay-off was fired wide with only defenders guarding the net.
A minute later and
Porter was tipping another close range chance just over the bar.
The hard working
Gavin Barton almost scored on 55 minutes when he intercepted a high ball and
tried to avoid the ‘keeper. However, the
home custodian got a finger on the ball and pushed Barton wide enough to avert
the danger.
Marske were level
on 58 minutes when a ball on the floor through the middle was stroked home into
the far corner of the goal. 1-1. From then on, Marske always looked likely to
win the tie.
A floating shot on
61 minutes went just wide of the far post as Bishops hung on. But the knockout blow came on 79 minutes when
the Bishops defence backed off to allow a free shot from just outside the area
which went straight into the top corner for 2-1.
Bishops fell apart
going for the equaliser, and conceded further goals on 84 minutes and 90
minutes.
