Whitley Bay 7 : Bishop Auckland 0

Team: Peter Jeffries, Arjun Purewal, Liam Clough (Carl Robinson 60mins), Christopher Lawson, Paul Moss, Joe Grant (Andrew Richardson HT), Mark Henson (Adam Strong 67mins), Stephen Salvin, Wayne Gredziak, Daniel Lennon, Gavin Parkin

Bishops welcomed back goalkeeper Peter Jeffries and Paul Moss from suspension, with Neil Wilkinson dropping out through injury.  Liam Clough and Stephen Salvin both played despite not being fully fit as Bishops took on the big spending Tynesiders.

The opening exchanges were even in terms of possession but Bay looked more incisive and hit the post in the ninth minute.  Bishops had to survive several minutes down to ten men when Purewal required treatment for a head injury.

After battling well early on Bishops first goal was a sloppy one with Bishops having two good chances to get the ball out of the danger area before the decisive strike.  The clearly struggling Clough made an initial clearance of the ball on the edge of the box but the ball went to Hodgson whose first shot came back off Purewal but whose second shot flew in on 25 minutes.

Two down on 32 minutes when a free kick was flicked on to Bell who headed home from close range.

The third followed soon after when Jeffries was adjudged to have fouled in a one on one situation following some good work from Chris Moore.  Only a yellow card and Johnson beat the ‘keeper from the spot with a limp lob.

Arjun Purewal headed a corner wide when unchallenged twelve yards from goal on the stroke of half time, but it was clear that the second half would be a tough affair.

Joe Grant was replaced by Andrew Richardson at half time.

Bishops had the first chances of the second half when first Parkin found some space to fire in an excellent shot which flew just wide.  The goal kick was scuffed to Gredziak b ut the striker fired his shot over the bar.

56 minutes and it was 4-0.  Clough pulled down his man just inside the area and Johnson fired home his second penalty of the night.

Two minutes later and Richardson was dispossesed near the centre circle and Bay broke quickly with Johnson completing a hat-trick.

Liam Clough was replaced by Carl Robinson on the hour and Strong came on for Henson on 67 minutes.

Jeffries made a good save on 68 minutes, tipping over the bar from a good shot.

The sixth came on 78 minutes with a simple tap in after Bay again attacked with speed and numbers.  The finish was a close range tap in from Hodgson.

Parkin had another decent chance on 81 minutes when his angled shot was pushed wide for a corner.  Lawson headed the corner against the bar.  Five minutes from time and Salvin powered in a header which was hacked off the line.

Chow made it 7-0 in the 90th minute with a simple header from a good cross.

What was always going to be a difficult evening proved to be a fairly embarrassing one for all concerned, and all attention now focuses on Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Hebburn.
