FA Cup Preliminary Round

29 August, 2009

Hebburn 3 : Bishop Auckland 4

Team: Peter Jeffries, Arjun Purewal, Christopher Lawson, Paul Moss, Neil Wilkinson (Jake Richardson 66mins), Andrew Richardson (Joe Grant 80mins), Gavin Parkin, Stephen Salvin, Wayne Gredziak, Daniel Lennon, Mark Henson

Both teams went into this FA Cup tie on the back of heavy defeats with Bishops losing 7-0 at Whitley Bay on Tuesday and Sunderland RCA inflicting an 8-1 thrashing on Hebburn.  It seemed unlikely that strong defending would be a feature of the game, and so it proved.

Bishops started with their first choice central defensive pairing of Moss and Wilkinson, although Wilkinson was carrying an injury and Andrew Richardson replaced Joe Grant in the centre of midfield.

Bishops started in blistering form with Parkin clipping a ball over the top for Gredzia but with the ‘keeper advancing the striker’s header was fingertipped out for a corner.

Two minues later and Parkin beat the offside trap and crossed but just too deep for Lennon at the far post.

The opening goal came on ten minutes.  Salvin won a 50:50 tackle just ouside the Bishops 18 yard box.  The captain advanced down the pitch a few yards before firing a ball forward to Gredziak who lobbed the advancing ‘keeper from 25 yards.  The ball nestled in the back of the net and hopes were high for a comfortable afternoon.

Henson had a low shot saved from the left hand side on 11 minutes and a defensive error on 12 minutes allowed Lennon to race forward but his low shot was saved by ‘keeper Donaldson’s toe.

After not being in the game in the opening quarter of an hour, Hebburn levelled with their first attack on 17 minutes.  Poor marking saw Crew in space at the far post.  Jeffries saved his initial shot but the forward put the ball into the net at the second attempt.

Hebburn ‘keeper Donaldson was lucky to get away with it on 20 minutes when he made a huge error of judgement attacking a ball in the air through a dense crowd of players.  After failing to collect he rode his luck and fell on the ball at the second attempt.

A minute later and Hebburn should have equalised when Crew lobbed over the bar after again receiving the freedom of Bishops defence.

End to end stuff and Jeffries huge wind assisted kick was gathered by Gredziak on the left but his weak shot was comfortably saved.

Just after the half hour and again the punt from Jeffries caused chaos as the ball bounced high to Gredziak who fired wide with only the ‘keeper to beat.

Defender Lawson almost put Bishops back into the lead on 38 minutes when he headed Parkin’s corner goalwards but the keeper blocked it with his elbow and gathered at the second attempt.

Four minutes later and another Parkin corner from the left saw Lawson rise cleanly to head home but the ‘goal’ was disallowed for an offence elsewhere in the box.

Scores level at half time.

Hebburn made a dream start to the second half with Gordon heading home a corner from close range on 48 minutes and when the unmarked Crew chipped in a third on 51 minutes things were looking bleak for Bishops.

Sixty four minutes had gone when Salvin bundled his was to the edge of the Hebburn box before being bundled over.  Henson placed the ball and curled it in direct off the inside of the left hand post to make it 3-2.

2nd Half:  Henson first dead ball success of the afternoon

Two minutes later and Bishops were well and truly back in the game with a slice of luck when awarded a penalty for a fould on Gredziak which appeared to be just outside the box.

After some debate Henson was elected to take it and stroked it home again into the bottom left hand corner of the net.  3-3.

The struggling Wilkinson was replaced by Jake Richardson before the restart.

Henson almost completed a ten minute hat-trick on 73 minutes when he took the ball from the half way line beating several players before letting fly from 20 yards.  The ‘keeper was beaten but the ball clipped the top of the cross bar.

Andrew Richardson received warm applause after a great performance when he was replaced by Joe Grant with ten minutes remaining.

On 82 minutes Bishops took the tie when Gredziak was again fouled on the edge of the area.  Another central free-kick. No doubt about who would be striking it, and Henson stroked the ball into the net again just inside the left hand post to make it 4-3.

Gredziak missed a great chance to settle the nerves when he blazed over from just oustide the area on 88 minutes.

Hebburn had one last chance with Jeffries making a good close range save when a corner was headed goalwards.

So, Bishops survive and go into a 1st Qualifying Road tie away at UniBond Premier division Bradford Park Avenue.
