Shildon were made to fight all the way to win this 114th Northern League derby between the clubs. The Bishops were without Joe Grant whom was playing for Durham County under 18’s, Steven Turnbull made his second appearance for the club at right back as Chris Lawson was unavailable due to suspension.

The Bishops created more clear cut chances than Shildon in the first half though the visitors approach play was impressive and this pegged back the Bishops. Simon Ord, Stephen Salvin and Harry Drummond were all involved in splitting the Shildon defence to set up Adam Emson whom squeezed his shot across the face of goal and wrong side of the post in just the 2nd minute.

In just the 6th minute youngster Steven Turnbull recklessly hacked down Sam Garvie near the half way line, players from both sides were caught up in heated exchanges though the referee was quick to quell. Turnbull was booked and somewhat fortunate not to be sent off, the youngster did not first appear to be suited to the right back role though to his credit settled into the game making some important challenges and interceptions especially in the first half.

The game restarted with some full blooded tackles. The Bishops created another scoring opportunity in the 8th minute, the impressive Ord one of a number of Bishop players playing against his former team crossed from the right which Gredziak headed just wide though he was heavily man marked whilst going for the header.

Ord was again involved in the action in the 17th minute, he cut out a Shildon attack to progress forward beating three players and unleashed a 25 yard shot that flew over the bar.

Harry Drummond won the ball in midfield and floated a pass to Gredziak whom clearly headed on whilst under great pressure from a central defender and Amar Purewal chased the loose ball but the keeper agonizingly just won the race and cleared the danger, this in the 28th minute. A minute later Shildon took off the injured Jamie Harwood and replaced him with Chris Bell whom had an excellent game for the Railwaymen.

Shildon broke down a Bishop attack in the 33rd minute, Steven Johnson was striving forward and he was cynically fouled by Drummond whom was immediately booked. Two minutes later and Shildon created their best scoring opportunity of the first half, a Johnson cross from the left was met by the unmarked Daniel Moore whose header hit the right hand post and bounced out of play, with keeper Jeffries making a desperate attempt to save the header and collided with the upright for which he had to receive treatment.

In the 36th minute, Emson skilfully lost his marker and worked his way past two defenders to make his way to the bye line and his cross was met by Salvin whose close range front post header flashed just wide.

The game nearly exploded again in the 38th minute with confrontations with players of both sides, the referee spoke at length to Turnbull whom he had already booked though it looked like a case of mistaken identity with Adam Strong. Two minutes later, Ord and Strong combined to find Amar Purewal in space whom advanced and beat two defenders then fired in a shot from the edge of the box which the keeper collected with Gredziak unmarked lurking for a rebound.

The Bishops were unlucky not to take the lead in the 42nd minute, a left hand corner taken by Amar Purewal was fiercely headed just over the bar by his brother Arjun. More Bishops pressure a minute later, a long Jeffries goal kick found Emson in the last third of Shildon’s half and he punted his shot over the bar from 30 yards out. Seconds later Ord robbed Moore in midfield and punted a ball forward that was chased by Amar Purewal with the keeper just clearing the danger by the skin of his teeth well outside of his box. Into injury time and Drummond already booked fouled Moore with the home fans fearing his dismissal though the referee to his credit sternly spoke to Drummond.

Half Time Score – Bishop Auckland 0 Shildon 0

Shildon started the second half assertively and took the lead in the 48th minute. On a breakaway Johnson on the right crossed and found the unmarked Moore at the far post whom headed home giving Jeffries no chance. Moments earlier great play between Strong, Salvin and Gredziak set up Amar Purewal whom was on the edge of the box unmarked in between both central defenders though was closed down whilst controlling the pass when it clinically needed a first time volley at goal.

Bishops regrouped and created a couple of decent chances, Strong saw it shot parried by the keeper in the 56th minute and a minute later Drummond fired in a 20 yard shot that just went over the bar, both Bishop players whom were eventually substituted were very effective in the game and continually closed down the opposition.

Shildon made another change in the 58th minute, taking off the excellent Steven Johnson and he replaced him with last years Northern Leagues top goal scorer Warren Byrne whom looked dangerous close to goal though thankfully for the Bishops spent time chasing long balls down the wing.

The last 30 minutes of the game, Shildon were dominant and should have added more goals after creating clear cut chances. The first of these on the hour mark, Lee Chapman beat the off side trap and progressed forward to blaze the ball over the bar with only the advancing Jeffries to beat.

Youngster Thomas Blackett made his debut for the Bishops in the 71st minute, the left footer certainly worked hard. Shildon’s Karl Everitt was belatedly booked in the 74th minute, this after a number of rash tackles.

Another heart stopping moment for the Bishops came in the 84th minute, the veteran Phil Brumwell punted a long clearance that completely caught out the Bishops back four, Bell raced onto the loose ball, turned Wayne Clarke inside out and then tried to round the brave Jeffries whose outstretched legs on the edge of the box deflected the golden opportunity out for a corner. Two minutes later and Everitt crudely clattered Gredziak, as in the first half the referee spoke to the Shildon player at length when most referees would have sent him off.

In the 89th minute, a lightening move by the visitors saw Arjun Purewal desperately cut out a Johnson pass that was destined for the unmarked Chris Hughes whom couldn’t have failed to find the net from four yards out with Jeffries at the front post. Though it was the Bishops whom nearly snatched an equaliser at the death, good work in a crowded goalmouth by a number of Bishop players set up Emson at the far post though his close range shot was parried by the keeper.

The Bishops battled hard all game against a star studded Shildon team whose build up play was at times simply brilliant though fortunately they were less effective at creating clinical goal scoring chances, the Bishops back four held firm with Wayne Clarke dominant and the whole team supported each other in this hard fought derby game.
