Bishop Auckland made one enforced change from Tuesday’s magnificent win over rivals Spennymoor Town. In came Chris Lawson at right back replacing Simon Ord whom was unavailable due to work commitments. This was Goalkeeper Peter Jeffries 50th league appearance for the club.

On a sunny afternoon the Bishops dominated the early play, in the 4th minute Stephen Salvin typically won a midfield duel and passed to Wayne Gredziak whom advanced to the edge of the box and squared the ball to the right for the oncoming unmarked Adam Strong who fired in a low shot from just inside the box that was gathered at the second attempt by the Consett keeper Daniel Staples.

Strong again thundering down the Consett left flank after 7 minutes, and was upended by Chris Scott whom was spoken to by the referee though Scott returned to the defensive wall and still complaining about the decision to award a free kick and was then booked by the stringent referee whom was consistent throughout the match. Adam Emson drove in the perfect near post ball that Arjun Purewal completely missed and Salvin’s effort was deflected for a corner.

Four minutes later and the Bishops opened their account with a superb goal, Strong won a fiercely contested duel on the right and broke forward to cross low which Gredziak unselfishly dummied at the front post to allow the unmarked Emson to slot home at the back post, great vision on the part of the impressive Gredziak.

Consett had started the game somewhat hesitantly though settled well after conceding the early goal. In particular David Pounder was influential in all the Consett attacks for the remainder of the first half as the Bishops looked fragmented at times though the back four held up well, Consett typically playing from the back through the midfield stretched the Bishops at times.

On the half hour, Joe Grant dived in to avert a Consett attack on the edge of the box. The referee thought otherwise and awarded a free kick which was harsh as Grant had won the ball. Steve Huggins drove the resultant free kick just past the right hand post.

Three minutes later and Consett should have equalised, former Bishop favourite, Gavin Parkin clearly turned his marker and drove in the perfect ball across the face of the Bishops goal which the unmarked Andrew Cuthbertson failed to connect to at the far post from only 2 yards out.

Into the last few minutes of the first half and the Bishops reclaimed their superiority. A scintillating move between Steven Turnbull, Arjun Purewal and Emson set up Gredziak whom fired wide from 15 yards out.

In the 42nd minute, Emson tried his luck from the edge of the box and fired in a low drive that was parried by the keeper with Salvin first to react to the rebound though the referee stopped play to book Pounder for his late challenge on Emson after he had taken his shot. Emson’s free kick was cleared by the defensive wall.

Half Time Score – Bishop Auckland 1 Consett 0

The Bishops nearly doubled their lead in the 46th minute, Emson playing against his former club superbly worked his way down the left flank, beating three players and his cross was met by both Gredziak and Turnbull whom had made a late run though both players got in each others way deep inside the 6 yard box allowing the visiting defence to clear the danger.

Two minutes later, a trailing leg from Strong caught Huggins just outside the Bishops box with Huggins driving the resultant free kick just over the bar.

The Bishops went 2-0 up in the 53rd minute,  Salvin and Gredziak combined in setting up Emson whose 12 yard pile driver was bravely blocked by the Consett keeper with the loose ball picked up by the advancing utility player Steven Turnbull whom thundered his drive home just underneath the cross bar. The youngster thoroughly deserved his first goal for the Bishops and gave another excellent performance as he never stopped running, chasing down the ball at every opportunity.

Consett keeper Daniel Staples had to leave the game with a suspected knee cartlidge problem, ironically he left the reverse fixture at Consett earlier in the season after being dismissed. Consett were fortunate to have a reserve goal keeper on the bench with Chris Moore going inbetween the sticks.

On 55 minutes, Turnbull and Gredziak were again involved in setting up Emson who’s shot from the edge of the box narrowly went wide.

In a rare Consett second half attack on 63 minutes, Andrew Cuthbertson advanced forward in laying the ball on for John Ewart whom had played in defence in the first half and pushed up into midfield for the second half and his left wing cross was headed by Pounder though Jeffries was equal to it parrying his effort away.

Joe Grant was replaced by Harry Drummond in the 65th minute, and the substitute first touch was to knock a long ball down the right wing which Gredziak chased and he was pulled back by Graham Irving in the penalty area right infront of the linesman whom flagged for the offence. Up stepped Adam Emson whom drove his penalty to the keepers left for which the replacement keeper guessed correctly and gathered the penalty kick.

The missed penalty did not deter the Bishops whom controlled the second half. In the 76th minute Darren Richardson replaced Adam Strong and manager Colin Myers took off the excellent Wayne Gredziak eight minutes later replacing him with Amar Purewal. All three Bishop Substitutes contributed really well to the game which shows the club has now got strength in depth.

Just before Gredziak was substituted, he had headed an Emson cross just over the bar from close range this after excellent powering work from Salvin whom made space for Emson to split the visiting defence.

The replacement Consett keeper cut out another Bishops attack though his clearance fell to Darren Richardson whom played in a perfect ball to Emson whom sprinted past two defenders with the keeper redeeming himself clearing the ball with his feet with Emson breathing down his neck.

In the 86th minute, a sweeping move in which Darren Richardson knocked the ball out to the left and the advancing young left back Tom Blackett superbly crossed to find Amar Purewal whom headed over. Blackett gave another faultless display at left back and the maturity he shows in playing the game is there for all to see in just his fourth appearance for the club.

This was an excellent win against a team pressing for a top 6 position. The Bishops were composed and never looked like losing the game and once again many good performances as all played well individually and as a team and this win completed a league double over the Steelmen.
