Some variable weather heading over to Penrith, and the match kicked off on a very wet pitch with the supporters of both sides huddled in the shelters trying to keep warm and dry.

The two teams struggled to produce any football of note in the first half.  Bishops only clear chance came on 11 minutes when a free kick was looped over the top of the Penrith defence by a Salvin header.  However, with Amar Purewal in the clear the ball jumped up off the turf hitting the striker’s hand which ruled out any chance of a goal.

Two minutes later and Jeffries scuffed a clearance which was lobbed back into the area but the reliable ‘keeper sorted the problem with a big punch.

The half was punctuated with free kick after free kick and both sides picked up yellow cards for what looked like 50/50 tackles on the greasy surface.

A disappointing first half, with both sides surely thinking that they could do better.

Half Time Score – Penrith 0  Bishop Auckland 0

The second half started in explosive fashion, as the weather showed signs of improvement.

47 minutes on the clock and Amar Purewal and the Penrith ‘keeper followed the ball as it headed to the goal line.  After looking like he’d given away a corner, ‘keeper Holland tried a comedy dive in an attempt to con the assistant into giving a foul.  But quick thinking Amar played a quick corner over the ‘keeper’s head.  The ball was partially cleared to Emson who blazed a shot which was deflected inches over the bar.

A minute later and Amar Purewal beat his defender but blazed high and wide.

52 minutes and Amar Purewal was again in the action as he broke down the right and cut a cross back but Turnbull stabbed the ball wide of the far post.

After making a great start to the second half Bishops found themselves a goal down.  After surviving a dangerous 55th minute corner, another attack in the 56th minute saw Dean Douglas get past Lawson and blast in over Jeffries from the edge of the area.

Douglas had another chance on 61 minutes when he shot wide from a good position.

Adam Emson was swept off the ball by a Penrith defender.  Amar Purewal was replaced by Darren Richardson before the free kick was taken.  From the kick Salvin powered a header but straight into the ‘keeper’s arms.

Two minutes later and Salvin dinked the ball over the top to Gredziak whose excellent goalbound shot was tipped wide of the post by Holland.

From the corner Salvin headed goalwards, but Holland was again on hand to tip over the bar.

The equaliser came on 67 minutes.  A corner was spilled by Holland, and the ball and ‘keeper were on the deck as Bishops players swarmed round.  The ball broke to Gredziak who delivered the vital blow with a nifty backheel which beat the despairing defenders.  1-1.

67mins:  Gredziak backheel heads into the net

A minute later and Gredziak and Emson broke fast but with only one defender to beat the ball became stuck in the mud under Emson’s feet and the other defenders recovered the situation.

The game swung back towards Penrith and on 71 minutes a lob just cleared the bar by a small distance.  A minute later and a shot from range crashed against the face of the bar.

Nine minutes to go and a free kick from Blackett was cleared vertically.  As it came down, Salvin attacked the ball but headed wide of the target.

84 minutes and the decisive blow arrived.  With Penrith defending high up the field Gredziak clipped the ball over the top to Darren Richardson who found himself in acres of space.  After resisting the temptation to hit it early, Darren raced forward drawing the ‘keeper and unleashing an unstoppable shot into the net.  2-1.

84mins:  Darren Richardson lines up his decisive strike

The next attack two minutes later brought Bishops another goal.  Gredziak again the architect with Emson finishing from close range with the home defence appealing unsuccessfully for an offside.  3-1.

86mins:  Adam Emson celebrates the first of his two goals

Harry Drummond replaced Steven Turnbull on 87 minutes.

Bishops added some gloss with a fourth goal on 90 minutes.  A high through ball bounced high.  Gredziak and Holland went head to head with the Bishops striker coming out on top. His header was goalbound, but with a defender rushing back Adam Emson made sure, hitting home from close range to make it 4-1.
