This is the 12th year of the Crantock annual Big Bale Push.

This competition has so far raised over £50,000 for key charities close to the heart of the local community.

The Big Bale Push is a fun event for all ages.  The races are run in teams of four pushing a full-sized round bale of  straw weighing approximately 420 lbs and measuring 4’ 6” in diameter over courses of differing length according to the class of race.  The main course for the “180 veterans”, and “The Open” is run over a full quarter of a mile through the village, both up and down hill, starting and finishing between the two village pubs - “The Cornishman” and “The Old Albion” .

A bale weighs approximately 420 lbs and measures about 4’ 6” in diameter.  Please don’t let your children run around the course in front of the bales!

SAFETY ISSUES

A  NOTICE TO SPECTATORS  AND COMPETITORS

ROUND BALES ARE VERY HEAVY

AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY.

In the interests of safety you are asked to be vigilant at all times during the evening and to keep a close eye on children. Road areas are particularly dangerous especially the area down Beach Road towards Poor House Lane.

The Marshall’s on the course were concerned last year that some “unattended” children were trying to “race the bale”.

All competitors must sign a disclaimer to agree that they are taking part at their own risk.

Text Box: Another Crantock Bale Push success as record numbers roll hay bales through the village for charity

Text Box: 11 September 2011

Text Box: Crantock Bale Push broke records again last Friday, when hundreds of happy smiling people enjoyed a fun evening rolling hay bales through the village - with local charities once again being the winners.

Text Box: “We can confidently say that more than £5,000 was raised again this year,” said Tony Brokenshire, Crantock Bale Push Treasurer, “meaning, more than £50,000 has been donated to support both local and county charities since our first event in 2000.”

Text Box: A record 110 teams raced through Crantock supported by a large and very lively crowd. Teams of all ages rolled hay bales for up to a quarter of a mile, including a team of blind and partially sighted representing the Cornwall Blind Association.

Text Box: "The friendly ambience of the evening is a magic formula, and draws support and competitors from far and wide. This year two kilt attired teams even came from Scotland,” said John Richards, Chairman of the organization, “flying down for the weekend, and stating every intention of returning next year.”

Text Box: 'The Open Race’ once again provided a hugely exciting and challenging event and was won by ‘Three Tall Blokes and a Dwarf’. ‘Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club’ took second place and with a new team from Exeter University Boat Club finishing third.”

Text Box: “The winning team which is very closely connected to Newquay Hornets Rugby Club, claimed first prize, and the Cornish Championship Cup, with the fastest time of the evening, a magnificent 2 minutes and 42 seconds. Sadly last year’s winners the ‘Arse Beards’ from the Newquay Voice, could not defend their title due to an unconnected injury.

Text Box: “But, once again the two famous pubs in the very heart of Crantock village, The Old Albion and The Cornishman, provided wonderful hospitality throughout, allowing competitors and spectators alike a chance to relax between races, and afterwards with live entertainment."

Text Box: “This year we have chosen to support, as our main charities, Cornwall Blind, Cornwall Hospice Care and CLIC Sargent.” explained John Richards.

Text Box: “Other local charities the Big Bale Push is supporting in this eleventh year include the two local Surf Life Saving Clubs of Crantock and Holywell Bay who do such magnificent work with the young, and not so young, on our local beaches,” said Mr Richards.

Text Box: The evening started very well with the ‘8 and Under’ race, using a much lighter hay bale. The winning team was ‘Cubert Lovie Dovies‘

Text Box: “The youngsters set the tone for the evening as they enjoyed competing against each other, cheered on by families and friends.” said commentator Nigel Eustice.

Text Box: The 'Twelve and Under' event was won by the ‘Just Clive’, and the 'Sixteen and Under' race was won by a team of boys called ‘Terry’s Titans’, representing Perranporth under 15 Cricket Club.

Text Box: “Then of course was the ever-popular 'Ladies' race, which once again was won by ‘Chicks with Sticks’, the hockey playing ladies who again proved unbeatable, winning for an incredible eighth time, in 2 minutes 11.81 seconds. For the first time they also raced in the longer main Open Event against all-comers, and recording a very respectable 4 min 29.97 secs.

Text Box: The full quarter of a mile race round the Crantock village is run by the ‘180 Veterans’ and the ‘Open’ events.
