Ancient Monuments

Crowan Parish contains various ancient monuments which are listed below. The remains date from the Bronze Age onwards, but no doubt Mesolithic hunter/gatherers passed through the area and in the Neolithic people probably settled here.

Crowan Beacon shows evidence of having been crowned  by a large cairn like the nearby massive Hangman's Barrow.  This huge cairn is 20m in diameter and still 3m high  despite having been obviously dug into and robbed of stones. It is probably early Bronze Age in date.

On the southern flank of Crowan Beacon, at grid reference SW 6642 3480, is what remains of a Bronze Age stone circle. Only four stones  still stand, but it may once have had 22 to 25 stones  in a circle about 26m across.

The St Aubyn family "collected" Cornish  crosses and three stand within the grounds of Clowance house.

There are Iron Age rounds in the parish, for example at Gear, Crenver and Tregear. These circular earthworks are what remain of defended farmsteads. In fact many of the place names found in the parish have an element meaning fort, probably dating from this period.
