Crowan Masons

Crowan once had its own Masonic lodge, though it’s not clear where it met. Since some of the St Aubyns were very involved in Masonry it seems likely that they may have met at Clowance

In 1765 the “Ship” lodge was founded in St Ives. Its Grand master was John Knill whose monument stands on the hill just south of Steeple Woods near St Ives. Every five years 10 small girls dressed in white dance through the streets of the town to this tall thin pyramidal monument where they are met by the mayor and two widows and they all dance round the monument and then sing the hundredth psalm. This lodge was closed in 1780, but was subsequently revived. On May 19th 1815 the “True Friendship” lodge, No. 678, was founded in Crowan and the assets of the “Ship” lodge were transferred to it. Its first Master was Thomas Lean.
