Those well-versed in the history of art may well be surprised to learn that
this beautiful, atmospheric portrait of a young Dutch woman was painted by
Rembrandt. It does not appear in any of the standard catalogues, neither is
it to be found hanging among any collection of the master's work. It hangs,
in fact, on the wall of the Arch-Chancellor's study. However, before the
hard-core Rembrandt fans take umbrage, we should perhaps explain that this
is not the work of the famous Rembrandt van Rijn, but of his countryman
and near contemporary, Rembrandt van Driver. His work is not nearly as well
known as that of his legendary compatriot, but as this picture demonstrates,
it amply deserves to be.
We have been trying hard to acquire more work by this artist for the museum,
but unfortunately these things cost money (that is, Nipper Tuckwell expects
to be paid for his services).
