Appointment of a Researcher for Churches Together in Kent

Churches Together in Kent is delighted to announce the appointment of Revd David Vannerley as a researcher to undertake a radical review of ecumenical working in Kent and Medway, in order to establish a fresh vision and new strategies to help us engage in effective mission.

Kent's County Ecumenical Officer steps down

Michael Cooke steps down on 30th April 2009 from being County Ecumenical Officer for Kent, and Secretary to Churches Together in Kent.  He served in these capacities for over 12 years, and has been given a very good send off by Kent's Church Leaders and the Council.

On behalf of Churches Together in Kent, Nigel Uden, its Chair "records immense gratitude to Michael for his long and dedicated service as Secretary of Churches Together in Kent.  He leaves many good things for us to build on.  We wish both him and Elspeth well for all that the future holds."

Michael writes: "For myself, I am not going away - I continue to serve two small parishes in West Kent and of course our local Churches Together group.  It has been a joy, pleasure and privilege to try to further the cross-church agenda of the Kingdom in our area.  Thank you for your partnership and friendship, and keep in touch. "

Re On-going Support, Advice and Information
Most of the County Ecumenical Officer/Secretary roles will not be part of the role of the Researcher (see above), and at its Council meeting on 30th March CTKent's Council agreed how on-going support and co-ordination (as necessary) would be continued.  Details are given in the Council Minutes.  Please note that e-mails to our ongoing e-mail address  ctk-7 @ ctkent.org.uk (NB without the spaces - see note below) will continue to be dealt with as soon as possible,, but that this might take a few days at busy times.

NB To provide some degree of privacy from spam mailings, especially from those who scour websites hoping to automatically extract
('harvest') lists with the usual @ symbol (and its underlying hidden code), we are not displaying addresses in such a conventional 'clickable' form.  Instead, we ask you to form the address manually from the left hand part, the @ symbol, and the right hand part.
For example a displayed info @ ctkent.org.uk would be our code for info@ctkent.org.uk

Exploring Contemplative Prayer

Asked what he talked to God about when he came into church every day and just sat, the old man replied: " Oh, we don't talk much.  He looks at me and I look at Him and we're happy together."

Contemplative prayer is being-with-god in silence and stillness, without words or thoughts, so that He may work in and through us.

This prayer of the heart is not just for monks and nuns or for particularly 'holy' people.  Is it for You?  It may well be.

The West Malling Julian meeting is organising an "Exploring Contemplative Prayer" day on Saturday 13 June 2009, 9:45 am to 4 pm at St Matthew's Community Centre, Wigmore (just off M2,m Junction 4).  There will be two talks by Séamus Cullen (retreat giver, spiritual director); time for questions; time for prayer.

For further details and tickets (£7, in advance) please ring Michael and Ann Echlin (01732 845550) or Sheila Waller (01732 848467)

Calvin Colloquium

To mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin,  a colloquium is to be held at St Luke's College, University of Exeter from 1-3 September 2009.   Co-sponsors of this event are Churches Together in England, Churches Together  in Britain and Ireland and the Department of Theology of the University of Exeter.

Dr David Cormick, General Secretary of Churches Together in England writes:-

"The colloquium intends to tease out the influences  of Calvin on the life and witness of the churches of England and Wales, and will bring together a wide range of scholars from many different churches.   An essential part of ecumenical understanding is appreciation of influences and spiritual styles which help shape Christian communities.  Calvin's influence, for good or ill, has been considerable on many of the churches in England and Wales.  we hope that the colloquium will bring scholars and those concerned about church life and inter-church relations into conversation about one of the formative influence on the churches in England and Wales."

The programme for the colloquium and a booking form can be downloaded from the CTE website www.churches-together.org.uk.

Costs are £185 (deposit £40) for an en-suite room and £145 (deposit £20) for a non en-suite room.  Pricing for double rooms and any further information can be obtained from Carole Golden (Tel: 020 7529 8132;  email: carole.golden@cte.org.uk).
