FAQ

A bit about me and how "The View" came to be

("me" by the way!)

What got you started with framing and photography?

I suppose the photography aspect came first. I must have been about six or seven when we went down to my Cousins Wedding in Yorkshire. The reception venue had a garden with a small windmill and having begged my Grandad for a loan of his camera, I stood for what I remember as being "AGES" (probably a minute or two!) until the vanes of the windmill were symmetrical

The framing was actually my Wife Carey. I have always enjoyed woodwork in a very 'crude' fashion - furniture making etc then Carey saw an advert for a 'Framing Starter Kit' on a Craft channel she was watching and bought it for me for a Xmas gift. This was a year when I was absolute on my New Years resolutions - as it turns out, it's the only one I maintained (the guitar is gathering dust again and the lathe is still in the box!) Anyway, I loved the idea of framing pictures and have slowly and steadily built up my experience and tool shop since.

Is The View a business?

In a word No. What I do is very much a hobby an non-profit making. Until recently all the stuff I have done has either been for myself, gifts or on request for friends, family and colleagues. Recently, at the 2007 Gourdon Gala, I displayed my stuff with a price that covered the materials and postage, with a surcharge equal to 10% - this I then returned back to the Gala Fund.
Admittedly things got a bit out of hand and what was a hobby became a mad rush to complete 13 orders for people within four weeks! Still, it added £31.50 to the '£1000 plus' sum raised on the day.

If you don't make any money from it, why do it?

Simple, I enjoy seeing the final product and get a real kick out of knowing that others think it's good too - I know of two my coastal pictures that are on there way to be displayed in some ones house in Singapore!! How many people can say the did that in their weekend!

Is your stuff perfect?

Again I can say no. It is a hobby and I am very much an amateur (to see the 'real deal' try Fintray Fine Framing). In my coastal pictures I include a "deliberate error" - nothing noticeable unless you really look hard and when you see it, it doesn't spoil the images! Why - well the first set of pics I ever did had this within it and I had no choice but to accept it, since then I've deliberately included something similar.

Where do you fancy doing images of next?
I've just finished taking some pics at Finechty (or as I discovered on the same day, what is actually called "Findochty"). It was the first 'Coastal 8's outing for me and my new camera so I'm looking forward to making and seeing the framed results - although I'm still waiting on my hand being back up to scratch. *Stonehaven (I know it's been photographed to death but I fancy seeing what I can do that's different)
