Objective: To indicate the Psychological aspects of each remedy state in relation to the Periodic Table.
If you would like to know more about Homeopathy jump to NWCH

IntroductionThe project started out as an effort to understand the relationships of the remedies in the element class, or kingdom. Placing the remedies in the context of the periodic table gives an overview of the Periodic and Group relationships between the remedies. The remedies are then broken down into expressions and rubrics, mostly taken from historical cases and provings, which are themselves broken down into componets, or "mental factors" - a single Rubric or Expression is often sufficient to define the nucleus of the psychological behaviour, or force, of a remedy (in complex remedies further rubrics may needed for each element). We all experience mental factors in the same way - jealousy is the same for me as it is for a Buddhist Monk, although in my mental continuum it is likely to be contaminated by several other unpleasant mental factors! If we check, this does pervade, even to the level of Rajan's Vital Sensation. The sensations associated with jealousy are the same for everyone. If we check the contrary position, i.e. an asserstion that every sensation is different, it does not pervade. If every sensation was different there would not be enough remedies in the world, and the word jealousy would have no meaning. Buddha identifed six root delusions and twenty secondary delusions, especially ... A well qualified shortlist of mental factors should indicate the central axis around which our self-defeating intuitions and perceptions revolve. Helen Palmer, in "The Enneagram" suggests nine axes, or intuitional styles, the transmission of which is said to have derived from Gurdjieff's visit to a Sarmouni monastry. According to Gurdjieff ... "The personality is a mask of compulsive behavior which covers the essence". After breaking down the mental factors we then to build up a (more informed) intuitive concept or "archetype" of the essential characteristics of each remedy. The archetype includes the symbolism of the alchemical doctrine of signatures, as there appears to be a fundamental relationship between the substance in the "raw", as in mineral ores for example, and its properties when isolated, potentised and used as a medicine. If there was no such relationship it would be pointless to attempt to place the remedies in this sequence! The build up continues with an effort to place these concepts within the broader spectrum of Psychological thinking, especially the AQAL concept, and also REBT, the therapeutic method of Albert Ellis. There is a bias towards the study of the symptoms of the Mind because the mind is the most sensitive part of a human being, and it is the mind that reacts to a stressful experience or situation in the first instance. If we can solve the problem of the mind, human suffering (Dukkha) takes on a different meaning. Understanding suffering and delusion becomes an avenue for spiritual growth. Without delusion the mind would be infinite and perfectly free, liberated into its own nature - Alaya (clarity).

Hydrogen; H2Prajnaparamitra Sutra. Impermanance. This moment. New Beginnings. Quote: "Hydrogen appeared in the first moments of the Big Bang. The spectroscopy of the heavens shows the enormous prevalence everywhere of hydrogen, but hydrogen is merely the primordial positive and negative electrons tied together." "The focus of its action is clearly on the mental level. There is a strong sense of an altered reality and altered perceptions. "Life doesn't fit." This perception is characterized by a concommittant feeling of spaceiness, or airy lightness." (Article by Julian Jones)

Lithium; Lithium Carbonate.
Carbonate of Lithium is a white light powder. When taken allopathically it quietents you down, slowing thinking and moving. This was reflected in prooving experiences.
Affinity: Heart. Mind, esp. Motion.

Sodium; The Natrums. Nat Mur.The Natrum Homeopath is aloof, but full of kindness. Its energy and symbolism: Salt, derived from the cold, harsh, Mother Ocean, is an electrolyte and preservative. It represents an aspect of the nurtuing mother archetype - but a cold one, where there is a deficiency of love; (Spare the Rod - Spoil the Child; Children should be seen and not heard!). The energy process is dissolving in water (feelings), losing form. There is a duality of flow v. containment and subsequent dryness and isolation. Nat Mur can be visualised as an extreemly sensitive mind, with a central core of tender feelings, which when injured forms a new layer of scarring. All sorts of impressions result in anger with leads resentment or guilt, and an impulse to increase the layers of protection against future abuse. It is the first element on the Identitiy/Relationship line of the Periodic Table. Its focus is on relationships. Its theme is emotional dehydration. In sensitive people, intimate relationships are often destructive, because they need to merge, and loose thier boundaries in unity. If it fails the person feels let down and hurt and betrayed, every time. This hurt is never forgotten, and destroys the wish to enter fully into new relationships. They bottle it and become reserved. The tears are held back and the vunerable side, the hurt, is never seen. Essence: Grieving over tragic events, that just goes on and on, beyond what would be considered normal. Stuck. Alone. The irrational, and self-defeating belief (Ellis; REBT) is that the tragedy is catastrophic, the end of the world. They demand that the world absolutly must be the way they wish it to be, otherwise life is unbearable. They have no tolerance for the frustration of their ideals. The result is a deep seated self-pity.
At a structural level, deeper than thinking or feeling, subconcious delusions are more powerful because you cant see them to controll them, they just resonate on the level of pathology. There can be guilt. The identity can become buried, and the sense of direction lost when they become tired and without goals in life. Suppressed sadness results in the Natrum depression. Crying releases a layer of sadness, but when it is pushed into the subconcious it is stored energetically. The origins of each layer of depression may be way back in the past.
Rubric/Expression | Mental Factors
Joyless |   Obstinate | Fixed | Taciturn |   Sad | Reserved
Apply these factors apply to subsequent rubrics .... Natrum men develop an inordiated pride in their intellectual knowledge. The proud natrum expert will grab any opportunity to show his knowledge and delight in praise. He needs to be appreciated, but this is not the know-it-all Lycopodium poseur. Basil Fawlty demonstrates the Natrum Snob, with delusions of grandeur. Nat. m. is indicated by tears. It is an irritable depression. The characteristic of the tearful Nat. m. patient is that she (or he) wants to be alone; any attempt to console irritates beyond endurance. The irritability expresses itself as a sensitivy to external impressions, esp. sudden noises. Thoughts are easily diverted because concentration and memory are impaired. "Wants to be alone to cry". "Very much inclined to weep and be excited". There are even tears with laughter.
Affinity: Nutrition and Blood, Mind, Heart, Skin and Mucus Glands.
Tabulation of Chakras, Doshas and Nat-M. Body Symptoms. The physcial and mental symptoms taken together indicate which chakra/dosha is affected.
At first glance ...The Base and Sacral chakras, which are considered as one in Buddhist texts, are badly affected. The petals, or nadis, wilt and the energy of the vital force, prana, becomes clogged, blocking the flow of emotion. The loss of energy at this level leaves the higher chakras relatively unsupported. The flow of sensation and emotion normal to the base chakras which feeds the higher chakras, especially the heart, is missing. You could prescribe on phsycho-physcial symptoms at the heart level, but you would be treating an effect - not the cause. We cry because our source of joy has gone, because the collapsed base chakras have lost the strength to provide us with an channel of emotional security.Colour Remedies are given in low potencies because a whole area is affected, their picture is not as specific as are the Mineral Remedies. Ayurveda ...The earth/water chakras (predominantly Kapha) are blocked and in excess, whilst the heart (Sadaka Pitta) and throat (Prana Vata) chakras are deficient. Ayurveda supports the deficiency. |

Natrum Carbonicum; Na.CO3IOH2O. (not Bicarb', NaHCO3). [Nat-c]It was proved by Hahnemann, and is one of the antipsoric remedies of the Chronic Diseases. In old school practice its chief uses are as an external application in solution to burns and eczema.Nat.carb personalities seem to combine the mild and loving character of Calc with the sensitivity of Nat.m. They are nice people! They have a sense of duty which is expressed in caring for others. Caring and self-denial can extend into martydom (like Ignatia). There is a sensitivity of assimilation that extends from the social sphere, (they give stressful people and situations a wide berth), into the physical symptoms.
The depression and irritability is agg after a meal, the aggravation diminishing as digestion advances, "as the food passes through the duodenum". (Lyc) The condition can deteriorate into a state of profound sadness, depression, and melancholy; constantly occupied with sad thoughts; though there is also the opposite, great gaiety and talkativeness. The nearest analogue of Nat. c. in the female sexual sphere is Sepia. The nervous system is strongly affected, and symptoms of hysteria appear. The narrow comfort zone reminds us of Merc. The sensitivity is like Phos.
Affinity: Digestion, Nerves, Skin, Mucous membranes.

Lassitude prevails throught the proovings. Lying often makes it worse.

Natrum Phosphoricum; Phosphate of Soda. Hydric Disodic Phosphate. Na2HPO4, 12H2O.Natrum sensitivity combined with the dark side of Phos. gives us a closed and fearful Natrum. The Phos. sensitivity may add the fear that something with happen ... "What if??"
Like other Natrums there is the tendancy to "dwell" on things.
Clarke; Nat. phos. is contained in the blood corpuscles, in the cells of the muscles, of the nerves and of the brain, as well as in the intercellular fluids. Nat. p. is the remedy for those diseases which are caused by an excess of lactic acid. Uric acid is dissolved in the blood by two factors, the warmth of the blood and Nat. p. If uric acid is deposited from its solution in the joints or near them, owing to a deficiency of Nat. p., or when it combines with the base of Carbonate of soda into urate of soda, which is insoluble, then there arises podagra or acute arthritic rheumatism. Affinity: Nerves, Mucus membranes. G.I. Tract. V5 |

Natrum Sulphuricum ; Glauber's Salt. Na2SO4.A very closed Natrum, e.g. will not discuss their grief. Clarke; The action of the Sodium sulphate is contrary to that of the Sodium chloride. Both, indeed, have the faculty of attracting water, but the end is a contrary one. In consequence of the activity excited by Nat. sul. in the epithelial cells in the urinary canals, superfluous water with the products of the tissue changes, dissolved or suspended therein, flows into the kidneys. Grauvogl described as the hydrogenoid constitution the state in which there is extreme sensitiveness to damp, wetting, bathing, watery foods, and residence near fresh water, especially standing water. Periodicity is also another feature of this state. This constitution he considered as providing the soil for gonorrhoeal infection. It corresponds to Hahnemann's sycosis. The provings bring out the cardinal symptoms of the sycotic constitution: Early morning aggravation (the syphilitic is agg from sunset to sunrise); the periodicity and intermittent character of the symptoms, the predominant chilliness and sensitiveness to damp, clearly relates Nat. sul. to Thuja, the vaccinal nosodes and other sycotic remedies.
The Natrum influence can be easily distinguished. In Nat-sul. It is an extreemly depressed state.
Affinity: Liver, G.I. Tract.

Kalis;
Potassium Carbonate. Kali Carb. K2Co3 Solution."The Kali Homeopath is a reductionst. He want the facts." The first element in the Iron series. Scholten predicts the focus of pathology in this series is on security, particularly on work and jobs. Some of the hardest metals are in this Period. They are concerned with defence and/or being attacked. In general Kali's are conservative and conventional, Hence, the well known image of two dimensional, controlled, rigid people with a strong sense of duty. I think of Civil Servants ... They can be very "straight" or "square", and stiff. It is as if the life force is restricted. Just like Mr. Spock, they have no feelings are the ultimate rationalists. The mind rules the emotions, so don't play poker with a Kali! Alternative Medicine is too left brained for these unemotional guys! Kali Carbonicum, sometimes called "vegetable alkali," because it is found in plants can be obtained from the ashes left from burning wood and other organic plant matter. The molecule has a Potassium Ion which is in Group I, which is notably insecure, a Carbon Ion, where the focus is on feeling comfortable with oneself and an Oxygen ion, which may suggest a fragile or easily burnt-out state. The Carbonate ion may give a sense of the individuality emerging, the fragility is demonstrated when it dissolves in water. If the sense of self is fragile and insecure they would fear being alone, or having to stand up for themselves. They would find structure and support in a a routine or a position, and in such a timid person loyalty would be strong (Scholten). The extremist and irrational belief (Ellis; REBT) is that stability depends on relationships at work ... productivity and rules! "If people do not treat me fairly life will be awful. I can't stand it." The essence of this delusion is that they are unimportant and doing their duty is the only route to acceptance. Because they need support they may appear to be mild, holding back their anger for fear of offending. Ahh! But when they get home ... just watch it! (Lyc) Kent: The mental state of K. ca. is one of peevishness and irritability. Easily startled by any noise (especially if unexpected). Quarrells with his family and with his bread and butter. He needs the stability and support of the family, but is irritable, and expressing his discontent.
Rubric/Expression | Mental Factors
Irritated by his family |   Indifferent | Impulsive |   Company amel.
Shreiking, Imaginary apperances | Fearful | Despair | Impulsive Kali Carb persons become oversensitive to everything. Fear is prominent; fears to be alone. What if this that or the other should happen! Horrible dreams.
Kent: Intellect impaired, does not care for anything. Indifferent, with bodily exhaustion; when questioned does not know what to answer. The "touchiness" of the remedy is very marked: "Cannot bear to be touched; starts when touched ever so lightly, especially on the feet". The pains, e.g. neuralgias, are sticking and burning like hot needles. These fly from place to place. Congestive headaches, the catarrh is thick and yellow. Hard tonsils and paritids. The colics have cutting, tearing senstaions. Relationships with the Plant Kingdom: Nux-v, Lyc, Puls. Affinity: Muscular System, e.g. heart, Serous and Mucous Membranes.

Clarke points out that it has an important Syphallitic assosiation. It affects the glandular structures as syphilis does. The ulcerations and and catarrhs are like Meurcuius. In the mental state there is irriatbility, cruelty and harshness of temper. The sense of mental refinement is lost.
In Kali's there is great concern about security and stability. Relationships at work are emphasized.

Causticum. (Potassium Hydrate)Its energy and symbolism: The Causticum processes are extreemly gradual. The character of Causticum is serious, intense, and sensitive. She desires salt or savoury food, sweets and cakes are not wanted at all! The patient is often exceedingly sympathetic - crying from hearing news bulletins or from seeing unfortunate people or creatures.
The Causticum child is delighful, she is very sensitive and excitable. Her stomach is easily upset. She may even stammer. Rubric, "Excitement during debate, while talking". She is extremely aware of others and intensely sympathetic for the suffering of others.
They are in tune with the environment and social issues. She also has a highly analytical mind, and she combines these traits with a deep sense of justice. This generates a practical idealism, and may take the form of social activism "to realise his vision of a more caring society". Rubric, "Inclined to discuss political issues". They frequently write angry letters to the Gaurdian! John Pilger's documentary style is a good example. Caustcum's serious conversation, when she gets onto recycling or global warming can be a bore! The heart of the case, Rajan suggests, is the delusion - "I must protect everyone." The emotions are very intensely felt. Prolonged grief, such as nursing a sick relative, may precipitate her troubles. Rubrics; "Full of cares about relatives" and "Sentimental during drunkeness". Idealistic Causticums become disillusioned when the world does not respond, and his campain comes to naught! If it breaks their spirit they can despair and become very bitter. The Causticum enthusiasm for causes can degenerates into fanatacism. Eventually the energy focuses inwards and they withdraw. It's a gradual paralysis that starts with the nervous system. She has a warm romantic heart, and the loss of a loved one can be devasting, they pine for years. They do suffer from anxiety. That they will forget something, or a feeling that something terrible is going to happen - especially to the family. There are repetitive negative thoughts, perhaps ruminating over unpleasant experiences. If the paralysis progresses to the mental plane, the reasoning starts to weaken and focus inwards, we can find great melancholy, with mental dullness. A type of compulsive neurosis can occur. There is a need to keep checking, and she becomes more fearful at night, esp 3-4 a.m. There is often a history of slowly progressive debility, stiffness, and, if the pathology is strong, paralysis. Beryllium; Beryl. Be3 Al2 Si6 018.
Beryllium was discovered as the Oxide in beryl with Silicon and Aluminium. Beryl has a glassy look, and has a hexagonal crystal structure. It is one of the lightest metals.
Clinically it is especially a remedy for respiratory deficiency with audible heartbeat.

Concept of this state: Group :Alkali Earth Metals (Anxiety on being observed). Period: Found naturally with Al (impressionability) and Si (support) Combining the Group "anxiety being observed" with the Period "lack of self-hood" and Silica "need of support" we would expect the Berryllium (or Beryl) mind to be like a delicate child, quite like Lithium, lost in its own trance-like world of fantasy and impressions. (Little Worlds of toys and games, marbles, Jig-saws, Xbox?) The state concept also suggests an Autisic mind, but compare with the Drug Remedies, esp. Anaholium (the crystal is quite beautiful - especially when impurities add further dimensions of colour). Affinity: Nutrition. Respiration. Mind.

Magnesia Muriatica; MgCl2Mag. m. first appeared in Hahnemann's Chronic Diseases. The general feature of Mag. c. appears in many symptoms, notably those of nervous disturbance and hysteria.

Patient is anxious, restless, always agg by mental exertion; during or after dinner seized with nausea, eructations, trembling and faint spells, amel by eructations. Calcera; Calc Carb."The Calcera Homeopath will mother you and make you welcome"Calcera is taken from the flesh of the Oyster. It manifests its energy in either mineral processes or in the life force seen in the Oyster itself. The characteristics of Calcera and the Carbonate can still be seen when combined. Calcera processes are slow and progressive. From the beginning of life on Earth, mineral calcium has been involved in protecting organs, eg. the shells of early Stromatoliths and Mollusks. Animal skeletons protect vital organs in a cage or ribs, or a skull, and give support for the muscluo-skeletal system. The mineral energy may be expressed in strong, homebuilding mothers, while the sea creature theme, may be expressed in softer, slower and flabby girls, like the Oyster, which is sessile, cold and wet. Aetiology:The Calcera child is shy and easily hurt. They try not to show it and work hard to be appreciated. Encouragement is important, since they may be late developers (their pearls develop slowly!).
Rubric/Expression | Mental Factors
Weeping at trifles |   Fearful | Weeps easily | Dullness
Fear, being observed   | Fearful | Diffident | Reserved | Ambitionless Driven by fear to protect their inner pearls of comfort and sanity they can, like other carbons "burn themselves out". If this endangers the security of home the distress is deeply felt. It represents the loss of everything the carbon aspect of her lives for. She may find comfort in her inner wisdom, as shown in the Rubric "Reads Bible all day", or as Dr. Sehgal observed, she is reassured by imagining that she is wealthy.

Calcera SilicataCalc ~ Security < -- > Sil ~ Standards As in Calcera the focus seems to be on the home. The Silica component adds "a need to make a show of his high standards", which are an expression of the "fixed image" of Silica, e.g. If she is a mother she is a 'kind' mother, she feels that the home is a very special one, with certain standards or If he is a Doctor his self-image is that of a very good doctor. The other side of needing to maintain standards is a fear of failing to keep up the required standards, and consequently there is a pronounced sensitivity to criticism. But which comes first? Perhaps Calcera's sensitivity to criticism casues the fear in the first place, which then manifests as a stubborn Silica (Sil:violent, crossed when) need to keep up appearances.
One of the main rubrics [Sehgal's 'kingpin' concept] shows how the Cal-sil state can be experienced in family life ...
Rubric/Expression | Mental Factors
Fear, after family confrontation |   Anger | Insecurity | Yeilding
(Calc-sil avoids confrontation) It is as if this yielding person is driven to the extreems of her patience by something that is wrong (sub-standard!) at home. She finally forces an angry and indignant confrontation with the offender. Then she becomes afraid that she has done so much harm that her own secure situation is in danger. The rubric Delusions, talking, dead people. didnt seem to fit in at first. In an actual case the client was into Reiki, (angel healing and chrystals). Many of us do 'find comfort' (Calc) in visions of beautiful realms beyond. Perhaps our ideas of heaven are shaped by our deepest needs.

BoronBorax: Sodium biborate. Na2 B4 O7 10H2O. Group VII seems to have difficulties establishing personal boundaries. We normally set up our boundaries when we can say "No!", or "That's enough!". In adulthood our boundaries, even our personal identity, can be damaged when we allow ourselves to be imposed upon. On the other hand being loved is a delightful merging of boundaries. The Borax child often comes from a home where the parents are frequently absent. Without sufficient nurturing a childs feelings of separation and lonliness cause an intense desire to be loved... to merge. If this basic need is constantly denied the child learns that it has no-one to rely upon. Ref: In Harlow's behavioural experiments infant monkeys preferred a terry-towl mother substitute with no milk to a wire mother with milk; see: http://www.violence.de/tv/rockabye.html. The article concludes that love-hunger is stronger than food-hunger. Mason and Berkson's moving surrogate produced less severe abnormalities, demonstrating that there are good reasons for rocking a child to sleep! (A will which relies on someone else. Typical of Group VII?) It suggests the possibility that he is so impressionable that the only reality he can accept is that of his teacher or role model. Carlyon suggests that strict parental control can weaken the will - and then this weakness runs through the entire constitution. Kent:The ability to form Intellectual ideas and judgemts is disturbed. Cannot follow a chain of thoughts. Things seem unreal. Alumina has a slow deep action, it affects directly the motor nervous system, giving a paralytic condition, with depression of stimulus transmitting centers. Everything slows down. Graphites
Hahnemann was quick to perceive that Graph. was much more than a mere remedy for skin affections. Like that other great skin remedy, Sulphur, Graph proved to be a leading antipsoric. Hahnemann's provings and observations defined its powers over skin affections. David Lilley describes the sensation of carbon as feeling insignifcant and alone in the vast cosmos, with great potential, and also the awsome responsiblity of creating something. A primordial fear of failure arises. But carbon has endurance, it creates the molecules of life, and their vital force has survived countless disasters and extinctions. Common, grey, graphites never gives up, even when life is grinding drudgery. Its a workaholic! A pawn, susceptible to negative thinking, to PSORA! "I could'v been a diamond!" The mind, like the skin could be described as thick, hard and difficult to penetrate, as if a barrier prevents outside influences penetrating - the opposite of Phos. Dullness. When thinking is blunt there is irresolution. There's a lack of sensitiviy and therefore the mind is dull. They shy away from mental work, they cant concentrate, and dont want to think, they just repeat what they are told. Learning is by imprinting. Eventually the mind becomes empty. Because thinking is blunt they doubt themselves, there is irresolution, timidity and many fears. They are always anticipating difficulties. This results in reslessness, they get worked up very easily, Rubric: "anxiety about trifles", and benfit from some gentle guidance. They cannont take anything lightly and are always nagging their Sulpher partner to tidy up. This covering up of an inner weakness is profoundly and typically Sycotic. They have to portray the right image. They feel vunerable about appearing in public, and dread being put to the test - Exams! They are so desperate to get it right and "fit in". When they do fit in they like to stay comfortably within their limits. Algebra and Geometry are way ouside their comfort zone! There is a lack of stamina, and corresponding fear of exertion, they might manage to play cricket though! Sil. is a great evacuant. Sil. produced in the provings sensation of "splinter in the finger," of "a pin in the throat," and whenever foreign bodies have became embeded in the tissues Sil. will set up suppuration in the vicinity and bring about their expulsion. Cowperthwaite: The chief property of Silicia is its power to produce a suppurative process, either in soft tissues, in the periosteum, or in the bone itself. A curious symptom and one of great value is this : Fixed ideas : the patients thinks only of pins, fears them, searches for them, and counts them carefully".

The symptoms of Sil. differ from those of Puls. in being more constant, more deep seated, and lasting longer ; for instance, the mucous secretions of Puls. become more purulent under the action of Sil. ArgentumIn Alchemy it is associated with the moon, and philosophically represents feminine traits e.g. intuition. The Argentum Homeopath will impress you ... Palladium and Argentum are at the peak of performance. Rajan suggests that these people are intellectuals who like to demonstrate their understanding. Silver is showy, so presentation is the thing. Perhaps Ken Wilber is an up-to-the-minute example. He presents the wisdom of Tibet in an attractive modern context, and his sophisticated, well-heeled audience drinks it in. Silver is also ductile and soft. When drawn out into a triangle, as an instrument, it give a clear, perfect note. On the other hand, just as silver tarnishes, Arg. met. symptoms destroy the very basis of the orators performance; the larynx is affected, (very traditional remedy for throat and larynx) and other symptoms include dullness, poor memory, difficulty thinking and prostration from mental exertion, especially in intellectuals. The performer becomes an introvert. The moment he relaxes he looses interest ...
Kent: "It is an anti-psoric, and from its symptoms I believe to be an anti-sycotic. It goes deep into the life. It especially affects the nerves. The causes of such a state are ailments from grief, disappointed love, or prolonged anxiety - perhaps from unusual responsibility or financial loss. Its ground, for example, may arise from a childhood where unusual and unrealistic parental expectations could not be fulfilled. The child learns that nothing can please, and that he is on his own, he becomes an emotional Tank! It is a lonely, forsken feeling. There is great self-condemnation, self-reproach and self-criticism. Compare with Mercury - another heavily Syphilitic remedy. In Ayurveda the two are very close. It is followed well by Syphilinum. In Aurum there is carius destuction of hard tissues and arthritic inflammations of joints and exotosis (bone tumors). There can be very putrid discharges. If Aurum is said to be an anti-syphalitic remedy (Agrawal, Sankaran), how can we demonstrate that this assertion is true? Mercury Mercurius. In alchemy its dual nature represented transendence - especially over death.
"The Mercury Homeopath charts and measures everything. His amusing quips contain glimpses of the truth." There are two Remedies: The only metal that is a liquid at room temperature. It demonstrates dissolution of form, transformation and change. If dropped It spreads and scatters into countless little drops then coalesces - It can't stand up for itself! The coalescence is said to symbolise new beginnings. It is used in refining Gold. It reacts with Gold by eating into it and degrading it by forming a Hg <->Au amalgam. On boiling Hg recondenses. In the body it is extreemly poisonous, amalgamating with fibres and tissues, creeping into them, eating them away, causing degeneration and necrosis. There is no adhesion. Mercury only amalgamates in special circumstances of trust, and then it mirrors the image back, e.g. a worrying, precocious child who mirrors adulthood. He becomes like the other person and can only trust those who mirror himself. Philip Bailey coined the concept of a "neutraltity of personality", meaning that his sense of selfhood becomes swamped by impressions. He becomes like you. The mind is scattered, full of distractions and images, but with a sharp focus on one thing at a time. The endurance and continuity of the personality and memory is poor. Under stress they fall apart. The ability to focus sharply is almost photographic. He takes in the details, compartmentalises them in byte-size bits, and then comes to a conclusion quickly. Some of the images arise from the subconscious realms, they can be Junian, magical and psychic, and come with a sense of power. Before pathology Mercurius, (Quicksilver) is full or gossip and chatter, sharp and quick, e.g. Entertainers or Salesmen who must live on their wits. Never off-guard. Hence a tendancy to become sceptical and suspicious. They are often writers and entertainers, communicators of the chat show, the gossipy type. The ability to amalgamate black and white can bring an awareness of truth (Hamlet). The Merc-Sol person needs to communicate, to trust you, talk and amalgamate, but as soon as they feel uncomfortable they "split", and detatch themselves. They can easily be harmed because the sense of solidity of self is easily vanquished. Paranoid, and tormented by stress, (eaten away, again?) they feel that everyone is against them and the only safe place is home! The develop very good defences. Mercury has a narrow comfort zone of psychological comfort, needs to be settled, no drafts, no exertion! Its best defence is attack ... (Syphilis kills the patient!) Mercurius is heavy. The mind SLOW, with a lack of reactive power (Vithoulkas), but there is an anxious hurried feeling. This, with Mercuries' instablity, gives rise to secret impulses - to strike out. It gets worse ... they begin to feel surrounded by enemies.
There is a relationship between thier inner fearful state and an outer stae of violence. There are control issues, aggressive dreams, and impulses such as to go on the rampage and kill, beat, destroy - with a blunt instrument. They dream of flying away - to escape (escape, attempts to).
As the thermometer is sensitive to changes either to hot or cold, so is the Merc. patient. "Profuse Sweat, Worse at night". This is a strong point of correspondence with syphilis.
There is tremor of head, of hands, of tongue. It is the tremor of weakness and paralysis; The mind is as weak and tremulous as the body; everything is done hastily. Hurried and rapid talking. On the other hand: slow in answering questions; loss of memory; of will power. Imbecility.

[3] Because of her disappointment with the surgeon plus the escalating exchange of un-pleasantries with the guy the state quickly developed into
Later, on reflection, she was left with the state (Some of the rubrics have close meanings, they are offered as alternatives. Identical rubrics are not additive ;-) All that from an exchange that would'v been over in 30 Seconds! This state can develop when we are in danger (Sankaran, Soul); here from the life threatening difference with the surgeon. The incident with guy, above, just brought the state to the surface. This is is not depth psychology, its just real-time observation of a developing state. Is it merely Acute prescribing? Regardless of Miasmatic Analysis the Present, Persisting and Predominating Symptoms reflect the imbalance in the body. I see Miasmatic Analysis (Depth and Pace) as more of a diagnostic checking toolkit. It is worth emphasising that Nitrogen and Oxygen are proximal to Phos. in the periodic table. In Phos. the state can be lively (fireworks!) - like the Nitrogen Compounds (explosives!). The acids, (which contain Oxygen) are axiomatic of exhausted, "burnt out" states (compare with Phos-ac, which is a "deadened" state). Other Rubrics and Keynotes ...

K5 Picric AcidTNP or trinitrophenol. C6H3N3O7Picric acid was first mentioned in the alchemical writings of Johann Rudolf Glauber in 1742. Initially, it was made by nitrating substances such as animal horn, silk, indigo, and natural resin. It is an explosive, chrystalline yellow solid. In Homeopathy it is used for brain fag, in worn out systems. There is a tired heavy feeling all over. It also affects the kidneys giving a throbbing headache which is worse from moving the eyes, whch my help overworked students.

Phos. Phosphorous. In Alchemy Phos. represents spiritual illumination. The light bearer. They love gentle colours, especially fireworks!"The Phos Homeopath approaches you in a sharing and intimate manner!" In the Phosphorous personality the Ego is well developed but lacks boundaries, but because of this they are impressionable and outgoing.
The Phosphorus patient is very sensitive to all external impressions; Phos. can be a genuine clairvoyant and may feel more spiritually gifted than "others". She feels other peoples anxiety. Because she is aware of their feelings she is capable of close friendships. She wants to please, and can go too far and then feels hurt if her sensitivity is not reciprocated. The lack of boundaries makes the sense of "I" vunerable. Solitude does not agree, they can be quite frightenend on their own.
Phos. is sensitive to slight odors, noises, touch. Slight causes (e.g. the effort of coughing) lead to exhaustion of either body or mind and even trembling throughout the body. Flashes of temper. The clairvoyant state can degenerate towards insanity.
Kent: Chlorotic girls who have grown too rapidly and have suddenly taken on weakness pallor green sickness with menstrual difficulties. The loss of boundaries extends to the blood vessels, "Hemorrhagic constitutions". In the Plant Kingdom: Bell, Bry, Lyc, Nux, Puls follow well. A devastated Phos. girl could get into an Ignatia state (or even Nat. Mur). At the menopause, if she's chronically worn out the state could be Sepia. Phos. Chakra problems and physical symptoms.
Synopsis: The Phos. issue of Clarisentience, of being too open to other peoples feelings, is due a lack of boundaries in the Sacral Chakra. Phos. people dont want boundaries, in relationships they are dependent and needy because they have a fear of being abandoned arising from an insecure Base Chakra. Phosphoric AcidThe chronic picture develops from Phos. The light, outgoing personality becomes deadened, robotic, or emotionally neutral. There's a difficulty in feeling any emotion except for anxiety or fear. They can't even get depressed. The Acid causes burn-out.
The cause is often "Ailments from separation". In a divorce, or when the children leave home they loose the raison d'etre. After giving everything they feel as if ther's nothing to live for (Aurum Mur). Homesickness in ex-pat's or refugees can be another cause. Sehgals also lists:

Arsenicum; Arsenic.
Alchemy: philosophical direction. "The Arsenicum Homeopath considers the relevance of every detail with his analytic mind". Introduction; Coulter Concepts:Irritable and restlessAnxiety, fastidious, perfectionist, trifles, do or die. self-hate Workaholic. Misanthropy Alone, Death Arsenicum individuals are well known for fastidiousness. Not only in tidiness, but on a level of self-perfection. Everything must be word-perfect, grammar and spelling are a source of endless agonising, and if he can't produce a masterpiece he abandons it. Life is a trail of abandoned projects. If she can't keep the kitchen perfectly clean she is so frustrated that she just gives up (to Hell with it!). This agonising process can lead to despair and self-hate to the point of suicide. He will rejoice if a colleage makes a mistake. He indulges in this competitive misanthropy because it makes his shortcomings seem slighly less serious, less glaring. He is typically very irritable, critical and sarcastic, especially if you don't see the point. The anxiety when something is expected of him is terrible. It is felt physically. This fear of making a mistake can manifest as fear of being late, missing the train etc. The Arsenicum businessman worries about the future, and about past business deals, how he could'v done better, and constantly revises his strategy. Work becomes a substitute for an emotional life. If the anxiety extends to health, he becomes a hypochondriac, with all sorts of heath fads and theories, and the well known fear of contamination. It can extend to others, to the school-run for example. The fear can extend to death. It appears that an Arsenicum state can be provoked by whitnessing death.
Rubric analysisAnxious fear of death; thinks useless to take medicine, is incurable, is surely going to die; dread of death, when alone, or, going to bed.The dread of death is behind the pathology of the Miser and other arsenicum states.
There is a deep sense of insecurity. A sense of being vunerable gives rise to dependancy and a need for support.
Despair, hopelessness, unutterable misery. The irritability and sadness of malarial cachexias; of the cachexias of quinine, mercury, and syphilis. Burning is another of the leading characteristics of Arsenic. No other remedy has it in more pronounced degree. States of lowered vitality. The prostration of Arsen. is remarkable.

Oxygen; O2
Being a gas Oxygen should behave according to the laws of Physics, which has been born out in a recent New York proving, see http://www.homeopathycourses.com. Ozone O3Ozone decomposition:. Light + O3 --> O + O2 i.e., O3 + O --> O2 + O2.Oxygen compounds such as Oxides of Metals and Acids show signs of burn-out or exhaustion. Example: A Phos. Student who burns out may enter a Phosphoric Acidum state. This is consitent with Scholten's image of column 16, and is certainly true of Sulpher. Oxygen is in Row 2, which is characterised by early development, perhaps as early as in the trauma of drawing the first breath as Dr Chatterjee suggests.

Sulphur: Sulph.
In alchemy sulfur represents represents the multiplicity of human nature and the eternal aspiration to reach enlightenment "The Sulpher Homeopath fits you into his theory". Sulphur throws things out, like the Vital Force itself, it has a centrifugal energy. There is heat, fire and volcanic action in Sulphur, and like a volcano we also see images of smoldering, decay and extinction. In molecular biology, disulphide bonds, (-S-S-) hold polypeptide chains in shape. Without these bonds, the DNA helix, ezymes etc, would be mush! Decomposing Sulphur compounds smell awful! (Sulphur skin problems are yellow, creamy and smell of rotten eggs!) The Central Delusion - Scholtens Stage 16 – Decay, In the Rubric: “He is disgraced”, or socially scorned. The extreemist view (Ellis; REBT) is that "I absolutly must be treated with respect", which leads to the self-defeating belief that "I will feel worthless". In children the Vital Force is strongest, and gives the clearest picture. Like "Dennins the Menace" (Lilley), high spirited and mucky, but hate water! Teenagers are rebels, with fiery passions, sexy and always looking for a quick fix of something or other. Adults have pride, and a great ego, which leads to arrogance. He makes his own rules. He is quick with money, and jumps from project to project without completing anything, using his intelligence to avoid real work. If something goes wrong, the volcanic psyche may erupt ... its your fault! His deep spiritual speculation is centered around his own salvation. - Progression to Chronic States Quite indifferent to others, he’s either too lazy or too tired to get involved. The central delusion “He is Disgraced” shows that at this stage, deep down his pride is vulnerable and he worries. The Rubrics bring out many aspects of decay and worry, e.g. "Anger about his mistakes", may indicate the stress he experiences. Clarke; Hahnemann found in Sul. the homoeopathic counterpart of the peculiar constitutional dyscrasia which tends to manifest in itch like eruptions, and which he named Psora. Sul. is the chief of the antipsoric remedies. It is this property of Sul. to divert to the surface constitutional irritants which renders it the chief of Hahnemann's antipsorics. Sul. has also an antipsoric action independently of its power of "bringing out" rashes. A key to many of the Sul. conditions is to be found in an irregular distribution of the circulation : flushes of heat ; rush of blood to head, chest, heart ; The other side of this feeling of fulness is a feeling of emptiness. "Faint, sinking, all gone sensation at 11 a.m". " Worse By heat" is another keynote of Sul." Worse At night" is scarcely less characteristic. Sul. is related to both the sun and the moon, which makes it one of the most important of periodics.
If sense of identity and self-worth are heavily disturbed Sulphur looses heart.

Flourine; Flouric Acid
The Substance: A weak but quite corrosive acid. When present in air it tastes sour and there is some eye and respiratory infammation. It penetrates skin quickly. After exposure it reacts with Ca and Mg ions, anywhere in the body e.g. in bone, liver and nerves. It is sold as a household rust remover. The Acid Ion (Hydroflouric Acid) adds restlessnes and exhaustion to the picture. Extinction of values runs through the Remedy Kent on Flouric Acid ... Fluoric acid is suitable in that state like Picric acid and Sepia and these medicines are particularly suited to that condition of enfeeblement of the mind and that disorder of the human economy that makes man so low that we have the state described as low mindedness. It takes that form in one who is a sort of debauch running after all sorts of things to tickle his fancy but it takes another form in a man who stays at home with his good wife. He takes an aversion to his children and to his dearest friends and his wife that is he has lost that true and noble and orderly affection and friendship and companionship which ought to exist and he fights against it. An orderly man considers his wife his best friend and he would rather stay with her than go anywhere else. To him there is no place like home. Now when man arrives at the state when he wants to go somewhere else that he wants to go away from home that he is disturbed at home that everything annoys him at home that he no longer loves his children as he once did he needs Fluoric acid. Clarke; "A constant, irresistible desire to walk in the open air; it dose not fatigue," is characteristics of Fl. ac.

So weak is he gradually becoming that he has an "aversion to every kind of work; to reading. Takes no interest in household duties." Becomes indifferent. Very tired. An underlying feature of Brom. is especially for individuals that are made sick from being heated. Also complaints that come on after a very hot day in summer. Getting overheated. But after the complaint comes on, no matter where it is, he is so dreadfully sensitive to cold that a draught of cool air freezes him to the bones; but he cannot stand being over-heated. | Iodine; Iodum
Burt [Physiology]; Iodine, through the organic nervous system, acts upon the whole lymphatic and glandular system, especially centering upon the thyroid, mesenteric glands, mamma, ovaries, and testicles. At first, it stimulates them to increased action; as shown by the congestion of the ovaries, producing menorrhagia; in the testicles, by increase of sexual appetite; the salivary glands, by salivation; the liver, by increased biliary secretion; the pancreas, by increased secretion, and so on throughout all of the glands, including those of the mucous membranes. This hyper-stimulation is soon followed by depression of the most marked character, with great emaciation, both local and general, which is the leading feature of the action of this drug. Allen: Persons of a scrofulous diathesis, with dark or black hair and eyes; a low cachectic condition, With Profound Debility.
