They laughed when I told them who I wanted to work for…
but their laughter changed to amazement when I got the job.
It was 2.07pm on 12 July 1994. For the first ever time since leaving I was returning to my old school in Yorkshire.
Although I didn’t realise it then, something was about to happen that day, something I would never forget…
The occasion was a pique-nique in the garden, a re-union for old pupils. I was tinged with that old familiar anxious feeling entering again through the old school gates, but what an experience to enjoy freely the school gardens. Above all the apple orchard! The apple orchard, next to the neibouring boy’s school, had always before been ‘out of bounds’. I breathed the air in deep, it was rich and heavy with the smell of apple blossom, then suddenly my eyes fell upon the face of my favourite teacher… my maths teacher Mr Dodds.
Would he recognise me…as he looked across he smiled fondly…yes he remembered. Fifteen years had passed, he was a little thinner and greyer than I recalled. But he still had that perceptive look in his eyes.
As we talked he took me back to how I was at school, I had been a girl with zero ambition, and even less voice, timid, unsure, and uncomfortable, preferring to sit quietly unheard and unseen in the back row…that way you didn’t get noticed.
Hearing him again reminded me so vividly how he had taken me aside after lessons that day.
I remember sitting in rapt attention as he explained ‘the secret’.
And as I applied this simple secret it changed my life.
Now, looking into his wise old eyes I could see his delight in seeing his special, once shy pupil that day in July. He knew without saying what he shared with me back then had inspired me to where I was today. For the once timid girl on the back row was now happy confident, fulfilled, and catapulting from success to success in one of the most respected corporations in the world, IBM.
I realised in that moment that ever since the day I first learnt “the secret” I have been living and sharing it…. and feeling the magic, the amazement and delight as this simple formula transforms the lives of everyone who hears it too.
It was as I was reflecting back on those special moments in the orchard, and remembering the feeling, that knowing, the distinctive sense in my gut… I knew now I was going to share this secret with a new generation, into the schools where it belongs.
Why should today’s generation wait a lifetime to learn a message which can transform their life today?
“Daring to Dream” had been born…
Let me share with you the secrets given to me by my maths teacher those years ago, the secrets which transformed that timid girl….enabling her to envisage, believe and achieve her dreams, and yours too …for this is the power of ‘Daring to Dream’.
