NEW TITLES FOR 2009

At the moment only one new title is firmly planned for 2009, but two of last years projects, that did not make it into print, may still happen given the right circumstances.

Unusual & Old Fashioned Fruit Trees (Now Going To Print!)

An awakening by the general public to the idea that we should be growing our own food in the UK, instead of buying imported fruit and vegetables from third world countries, has prompted the idea for this book. Our farmers can grow carrots and potatoes far more efficiently than any garden plot, but fruit is relatively expensive. Even so, our big apple orchards that were grubbed up in the past are now being replanted, as are cherry and pear orchards, so I decided to focus on different fruit that is not normally grown commercially in the UK. Some fruits listed will definitely need Winter protection, but most included don't and many are old fashioned fruits that have been long forgotten. Others are hardy newer imports that the general public just don't know are available. At the moment this project is being written as a web-site that is free for anybody to look at, but after completion, it may go into print on paper, or if my E-book plans ever reach fruition, it may be sold as an E-book along with others. Following on from the Fruit Trees project I have started a new project that is well under way and that is the same idea, but with "Vegetables, Herbs & Other Edible Plants." (Now Going To Print!) Many of these are not food plants at all, but we do ingest them in many other ways such as make drinks with them, as for Tea and Coffee, use them in the production of confectionary as with Angelica and Liquorice, or even use them in the production of herbal remedies and medicines as with Aloe Vera. A Falklands Soldier

(This project has been put onto the back burner for a while now, but I am still hopeful that it will be completed in the not too distant future.)

A friend of mine was in the parachute regiment for about 20 years before being invalided out of the forces with a broken back. He served in the Falklands conflict amongst others and has several times expressed an interest in telling his story of how it really was. There was a reunion in the Falklands last November and he made some notes of the events that took place which he intends to add to his autobiographical tale. Like most long term soldiers he has inner conflicts and from my own experiences with my very different and yet similar mental health issues I personally feel that he will find the writing of his story very therapeutic and of course very rewarding as did I with mine, so I sincerely hope he completes the project. It will almost certainly be well into 2008 before the book is printed.

Gardening Tips Month By Month (Now On A New Web-site.Click for Link.) This was a project for 2008 that may yet be made into an E-book now that I am a little nearer with my plans for my commercial web-site)

This title may well not be completed, but work has started on it. My mother, Mrs F.M. Hartley, who wrote, "Knitting Patterns For Beginners," "From Hardware Shop To Garden Centre" and jointly wrote "Two Tales Of War" has been writing a monthly "gardening tips" article for the local talking newspaper for a couple of years now.  Several people have suggested that she write a gardening book as she has much professional experience to tap into from running a garden centre for over 20 years and she has always scorned the idea, but as I typed up her monthly articles to the newspaper I thought that if they were edited they could be made into a gardening book with a different slant to the usual that simply lists plants and their care.
