In it’s inaugural year of 1978, total prize money was £10,500 and the first ever World Champion, Leighton Rees of Wales, received a cheque for £3,000. This year the prize money was somewhat more for the flagship B.D.O. World Championship Knock Out.

John Boy Walton hit a 9 darter in the recent Masters when he lost to Robert Thornton and if he had done the same in the 2008 B.D.O. Championship he would have received £52,000 for that alone. However this time he could not find enough form when he played him again in the 1st round and lost. Phil Nixon played Martin “Wolfie” Adams in the final last year, but gave him an easy game this time losing 3-0 in the 1st round to him. Adams was in tears from the stress during an interview afterwards. Andy Boulton from the Potteries got through the first round and then lost to old timer Ted “The Count” Hankey. Co Stompe was pleased to get through the first round only to lose to Brian Woods.

Co Stompe’s team mates did not fare much better as all 6 Dutch players had gone out by the Quarter Finals.

Ted Hankey went out to Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton went out Martin Adams as well in the Quarters.

In the semis Adams played very well, but Webster had the edge in the end. At one time Webster thought he was going to lose it as he was going down, but he pulled back and went on to take it. Mark Webster is the Number 1 seed for Wales even though he is only 24 years old. Webster who is training to be a plumber lost in the 1st round last year, but played superb darts throughout the competition this time and made it to the final.

The other losing semi finalist was Brian Woods who lost comfortably to Australian Simon Whitlock.

Webster and Whitlock both produced some excellent darts in the final which featured 30 X 180s with 15 coming from each player. Webster had a final match dart average of 30.69 and Whitlock 31.31.

It was a very close final with brilliant scoring and was a worthy end to such a prestigious competition.

Mark Webster played in the first leg of the tournament and threw the very last dart at the close of the competition.
