A Pre-Season Practice.
Last Monday night a few of us got together for a practice night, before the first match of the new season next week. Unfortunately not many of our team joined us, but a few strangers did, including one young lad called Lee, who said he had played in another nearby town. With an unknown spectator my darts seemed to be going well and for a while I put on quite a show as I dominated the board.
As
usual I was drinking soft drinks and they suddenly started to go through me so I
disappeared out the back for a minute. When I returned and picked up my darts to
throw again I said, "I had better lick my fingers for a better grip. On
second thoughts," I added, "perhaps not, as they are already wet
anyway."
Geof then brightly said, "That reminds me of the old sign on the golf course telling golfers not to lick their balls!"
As I continued my game I started missing the twenties as consistently as I had been hitting them a few minutes earlier. I said, "I am playing crap now and the darts earlier were just a flash in the pan! I'm hitting nothing now my game has gone down the toilet!"
Nobody else thought it was funny, but Pat smiled politely being the lady that she is.
Geof had been marking a few games for us while we played a foursome, best of three, but his marking was getting worse, so I said, "I thought that it was Pat that had to go back to school this week, not you!" (Pat is a teacher)
After
my letting Pat down badly, even though she kept getting the doubles to start,
Geof picked up his darts and commenced to show us how it should be done. A
couple of nine darters (301 with a double start/finish) persuaded me it was time
for a rest and a much needed sit down.
Then a girl came in with her large beefy partner looking for a game of darts. He said, "Debs used to play for Leicester County and liked to play against men." He then added that he liked to see her beat them.
So, I wisely stayed off the board the rest of the evening and it was getting too late for me to play darts. The first match wouldn't be 'till next week anyway!
