Bass Cup Team Knock Out (14/7/08)

The draw was for the Globe to play Libbys on board one and for the Pear Tree Club to play the Plough on board three. The evening looked like getting off to a good start with both players breaking on board one with their first 3 darts and then the wire came off the board. Things did not get off to any better start on board three with the first player for the Plough getting a brush in the first leg. Although it was a one sided game for the Pear Tree against the Plough with the result being 4 –1 to the Pear Tree, both sides could have played much better and apart from a 156 finish from Nigel Cox there was not really any exhibition type darts.

All the fun and action was to be had on the other board where it looked as though the Globe were going to slaughter Libbys. When the score reached 3 – 0 to the Globe everyone thought it was all over, but a couple of very good legs from Charlie Burns for Libbys gave them hope. The next pair on were Alan Hartley for Libbys and Keith Stratful for the Globe and both players threw some good darts, but it seemed that Libbys were to be given another chance and the game went to Libbys. Robbie Scragg was number 6 player and he did the business as well taking the score to 3 –3. At this point everyone in the room was watching and things were getting tense. Young Aiden Barry was up against Tom Hylton and a superb 110 finish from Tom got the Globe lads all excited, but it was not going to be that easy. A late start from Tom in the second leg gave Aid all the chance he needed and he took it to level up the score. The atmosphere in the room was electric and everyone would admit there was more interest in the last leg than there was in the final that was played afterwards. Aiden and Tom both got down to a double and after a nail biting struggle Tom Hylton finally got his double to put the Globe through.

The final was almost an anti-climax after that game with Skin Thompson up first for the Pear Tree. Although the first leg was close, he took it and had no trouble with the second. Boo Hall played second for the Tree and tried to get some order with the crowd more interested in their beer and talking. After a few seconds of shouting the room quietened down a bit, but Boo was clearly wound up and stormed away with Shanghai on twenties, a very nice 120 start. His second leg was just as good with him leaving 8 after 9 darts. That made it 2 – 0 to the Tree. Third up was Nigel Cox who also threw a couple of great games hitting a 140 score in both legs. In his second leg his 8th dart was for the bull. It was up to Paul Benn to put the gate up for the Tree which he did, but Phil Mason for the Globe did his best to make a game of it. With a quick start and a couple of good scores Phil took the first leg, but had no staying power and Paul seemed to wake up in the next two legs taking them for the Pear Tree to make the score a one sided 4 – 0.
