Miners V Prince Of Wales 19th October 2009

As always, the Prince of Wales team, received a friendly greeting from the Lady Captain, Jackie McFarlane, and the rest of the Miners Arms team tonight on their away match at the Miners. I immediately tried to upset her by asking for a duplicate match result sheet to replace the one that seemed to have gone missing from the 5th of October, but as efficient as ever, and with good grace, she filled out her third copy of the match result for me to update the web-site and tables. (Many apologies must go again to the team for the first two missing results!)

Captain Billy Evans played Jackie McFarlane and took advantage beating her in this week’s game in the Captains League.

The match itself got off to an unconvincing win for the Prince with a win for Tam of only two – one, even though he had a splendid 125 finish in one leg.

Steve Holroyds son, Rob, had a rather nice two – nil, win followed up by a loss by Johnny Gartshore to John Hicks.  It was an unexpected loss after John’s first leg where, like Tam had done earlier, he finished 125, but John did it with an unbelievable Bull, 25, Bull finish. Perhaps he was too busy basking in the glory after his finish, as had had a grin from ear to ear, until he had lost the next two legs.

Kevin Birt followed up for the Miners with a splendid two – nil win, over Steve Holroyd, to even it up for the Miners, although Steve had a great 115 start in one leg. Old timer Sid Maddox lost to Aiden Barry who is gaining more confidence as the weeks go by and it is starting to show in his games with more and more regular wins coming his way.

Next up were the two captains drawn against each other for the last game of the singles. Jackie was out for revenge against Billy and very nearly had it with a narrow loss of two – one to Billy, giving the Prince four games and one point. Tam and myself put up the gate for the Prince in the first doubles game with a two – nil win, although it should have gone to the third leg as the Miners players had the second leg sewn up, but couldn’t finish. John made up for his earlier loss with the help of Rob in the last doubles game to put the score at six – two, to the Prince.

All the players agreed that it was a most enjoyable match that was only topped by Jackie’s superb stew that went down very well with everybody.
