Prince V Mansfield House 18/5/09

We, the Prince Of Wales, played the Mansfield, last night. To be correct we played The “Rugeley  Progressive Working Men’s Club” at the “Mansfield House” as somebody pointed out while we walked across the car park. The next comment was, “Pat can’t go in then as it’s for “Working Men.”
I added, “Neither can I then,” but that made them laugh more than they should have done! I of course meant I am unemployed.

On reaching the bar to get the drinks half of the Prince team immediately decided that they were going to sign up for the R.P.W.M.C. next season with the Mild at £1.92, Strongbow at £1.98 and Carling at £2.28 a pint!

The joke about not being a working man came up again and Tam said, “I’ve been working since 7………This morning.” Then added, (Remember he comes from Glasgow) “Actually, I’ve been working since I was a kid. At 12 I was on the milk rounds, at 16 it was the Post Offices and by the time I was 21, I had worked my way up to robbing the Securicor cash vans!”

Anyway, to the match:-

The first game was OK for the Prince with Jim winning 2 – 0 and scoring a 120 break in the process and then Jonny G followed up with a 111 start and a 2 – 0 win. After that I went up and that was when the Club started to win. With wonderful scores of 3, 9 and a few 26’s thrown in for good measure from me, I lost 2 –1 to M Jones. Geof Taylor went up next and lost 2 – 0 to M Heath. However, Captain Billy went up fifth and although he nearly had a brush in one leg, he eventually won 2 – 1.

Tam was on sixth with and in one leg had a lovely shot of 156 from 170 to leave 14, I think, although there was some confusion over what he hit as he pulled his darts out before the marker had added them up and nobody else was too sure! An unorthodox 40 finish in another leg with a 5, 11 and double 12 helped him win 2 – 1 and gave the Prince one point.

Jim and Steve played good, solid, steady darts, to put up the gate for the Prince, which was just as well because the last match was a great game and very close. Aiden hit a 140 for the Prince in one leg that was quickly followed by S Grant for the Club hitting a 140 in reply. A different finish of 3, double it, from Aiden levelled up the second leg and some good darts from both pairings made it a very close last leg that S Grant and M Jones for the Club were pleased to win.

I think it is fair to say that everybody enjoyed the match, especially, as the new team of the Mansfield, gave us such a warm welcome, and all I can say is that they deserved a better score line than they had, because they played some good darts. I wish them all the best and hopefully, they will stay with the league for next season and remain with us for the foreseeable future.
