Return To Poems List

This poem was written by Pat Taylor about the Knock Out on Easter Monday at Libby's bar.

DOUBLES FOR DOUGH.

Doubles for Dough! the poster said,
"What the 'ecks that? - Do you get fed?"

We all troop along to LIBBY'S (upstairs)
"Pay your entry fee here lads" - Graham declares.

They look round the room - eye up opposition,
Then practice each board for feel and position.

8-30 precisely the draw is announced,
Who are they playing? Will they get trounced?

The players pair up - the atmosphere sound,
Who's got a bye then - and through the first round.

Hartley and Gartshore to name just two,
Necks crane forward to get a better view.

Names I've not heard of like Peachy and Skin,
Ticker, Boo and Spuggy - they all want to win.

They all play their socks off right up to the end,
The other guy's won - but he'll still be a friend.

The last game is played - it's Hylton and Billy,
Predict the result - now that would be silly.

In the end Mark Hylton is the ultimate hero,
Winning the tournament 3 games to zero.

Each is applauded and given a cheer,
And they'll do it again - but later this year.
