Shipmates and Family and Friends of Sheffiels Vterans:

What a great week end. For me the highlight was the circle at
Nelson sat night. It felt like I was with you all again on a
standard Sheffield lads run ashore. I have had 9 ships in my Naval
career and none of then touch the bond that we had, brilliant thank you.
Bob and I will get together and put on something smaller next year.
Perhaps we can meet at Twickenham where SAMA have their annual meeting.
The ARMY v NAVY rugby match is usually the 1st weekend in MAY.
Ideas welcome.
On a more serious note anyone who feels they need help with PTSD pse
call me as I have some lines and contacts to help you. I have had
treatment and am able to deal with my sense of guilt and emotions in a
controlled manner, my wife also fully understands.
Till we meet agian pse pass all the photos to Bob and lets make the
Sheffield Gallery something very special.
Till we meet again
Fondest Regards

Continued from previous entry

You see, although I was safely installed in 'civvy street' by then, I
lost mates on the SHEFFIELD, COVENTRY and AMAZON, and I'll never
forget, nor forgive Argentina for that, but I'll always remember my
mates. The peace treaty was signed on the PLYMOUTH, if you remember,
and a bomb actually went right through where I used to sleep.

Martin (Tiny) Little ex LRO(G) HMS SHEFFIELD May 81-82

ps. GOOD LUCK to England in the World Cup, especially against you know
who! It's for the Scots, Welsh and Irish too.

Hi there to you all, Just a quick ditty - I hope that you had a very
enjoyable (albet emotional) w/end, but just to let you know that
the "COV" reunion is also coming up and there are feelings similar to
that you have all expressed. For all you who then ventured onto
the "MANCH" and bring her out from builders, I am in the process of
setting up our web site and the 2nd reunion has taken place, but not to
worry there is another next year in "NELSON S/Rates". Special thoughts
to the following people; Kirsty -&- Ginge, Louise -&- Percy, Jaff McCaff,
BTC, Gilly and Pete Meyers also to the others too numerous to mention -
I hope to see you all soon, and for anyone around the Bristol area, I
am working on the Type 45 project give us a call BTC has my phone no
and address - an can go for a bevvy.

Take care all.

Dear All
I feel privaliged to write in your website, but after the reunion
weekend i felt like one of the family!
It was a fantastic weekend, one i will never forget. I didn't realise
how emotionally draining it would be. I have been through everything
with Percy the past 2 years, but never realised the effect it truly
had on me. My thanks go out to the wives/girlfriends and families who
helped me through the weekend, even though i was trying to help Percy
through it!
Thank you to everyone i met that weekend, but i think i could only do
this again in 5 years! -although we hope to meet every year now in
Pompey with anyone whos down here. Thanks to Bob and Gilly for
organising everything, you did a wonderfull job, most appreciated, and
a good chance for everyone to release their emotions. We must all keep
in touch, and help each other.

Take care, love to you all
We will always be the 'shiny, shiny Sheff!'

I have been reading the messages with Mark, put up on the website over
the past few days, wanting to add something myself, but unsure as to
what I could offer which hasn't already been said.

I'd like to pass on my thanks to Bob -&- Gilly. Although Mark was in two
minds as to whether he would be able to carry the reunion through,
thank you for giving him and the rest of us the chance, however far we
got. The hard work which you most evidently put in was much
appreciated. Adjustment of emotions aren't easy from one level to the
next and both Mark and myself found it emotionally exhausting, though
very worth while and enjoyable.

You are all very remarkable men, I felt very priveledged to be part of
Saturday and Sunday, thank you so much for making me feel welcolme.

I hope as we move into the future better awareness and treatment will
be avaiable for PTSD. I feel then we will all be nearer to obtaining
the full recognition that you all so rightly deserve. Take care until
next time.

Hi everyone,
I would like to thank everyone I met, especially Bob and Gilly for one
of my best weekends ever.
I came along with Martin(tiny)Little and felt priveleged to be there.
I don't think I've felt so emotional,I laughed and cried loads.
I can understand now why anyone in the forces feels like they are a big
family,I was certainly made to feel part of it so thank you all for
that.
It was so nice to meet you all and I'm definately looking forward to
meeting you all again soon, especially Deaks,Eddie,
Mick O,Jan,Baggy,Bungy,Fordy,Windy and naturally Bob and Gilly also
anyone else I've forgotten to mention(so many names and faces)
Thank you again
Best wishes and here's to the next one!

Well guys what can be said that hasn't already been. My parents came
down with me and they have said that when we all met in the middle of
the floor and formed a 'honeycombe' both shed tears and said it was
most probably the highlight of the night, forming this bond.
Nice one guys. We are the Sheffield, Shiny Shiny Sheffield.

Thanks so much to everyone who sent an e-mail to my teacher Miss
Workman! She got 4 e-mails and was invited to the reunion (some of you
may have seen her - she has long kind of bronze-coloured hair and
amazing fashion sense!). By the way, it was 1975 not 1976 that she was
rescued by the HMS Sheffield.

Bob - I gave her the two pictures you sent me and she showed me where
she was pulled aboard and stuff like that, so thank you for them!

Thanks again to everyone who e-mailed her and also to anyone reading
this who might actually have helped rescue her because she's a really
great person and she deserved to be rescued!!!!

Well done Bob brilliant night, can't wait for June 15th, turned up a
bit early felt nervous but once inside felt as though we hadn't had
twenty years go by. Hi to Steve -&- Julie, enjoyed the chat, one of the
lessons I learnt from talking to Pinchers, DC, Dusty, Cliff, Dave and
many others was that the MoD didn't help by ensuring we all had some
sort of counselling in Nelson when we got home, which meant most of us
suffered in silence. Joining the Glasgow helped a little especially as
she went straight back down, had a chance to get a few ghosts out of
the system.

Bob Mullen gave to me on Saturday at the memorial, a poem he had
written, expressing his thoughts. On Sunday I heard another one from
Nick Borrit Jnr, I discussed with Bob the possibility of getting all
the other dits and poems written since 1982 weather written by Ships Co
or relations together in one book to be published for and on behalf of
all concerned, so if you have anything of that nature to share please
send them on to me and I will co-ordinate the publishing

What a night. I entered the room with apprehension not knowing what to
expect. It was great meeting up with everyone again after so long and to
be able to talk about that terrible day, something I have not been able
to do for a long time. My 2 civilian friends could not believe how
strong the bond was and still is between the Sheffield crew even after
20 years. Thankyou Bob and everyone else who was involved in putting it
altogether. I look forward to seeing you all again in June

You will find it very strange that a civilian is signing this guest
book, but there is a reason. Back in 1982 I was the Venture Scout
Leader of Spartan VSU in Chelmsford and one of my Ventures was L.W.E.A.
Tim Bailey who was serving on the Sheffield when it was hit. Tonight,
Monday 6th May 2002 I was listening to John Peel's R4 programme Home
Truths when I heard about the reunion that is happening and the story
told by one of Sheffield's crew. This brought memories flooding back
from the time when Tim returned to us telling of his experiences down
in the south Atlantic. I just wanted to pass on to all those that were
there that I hope you all had a good, if that is the right word,
reunion and to say my thoughts are still with you all, especially with
Tim. Thanks you.

Yesterday my ICT teacher talked in assembly about the time when she was
on the college yacht Ichthyosaur and they were caught in a storm off
the coast of France in April 1976 for 3 days before the HMS Sheffield
came to her rescue. She said it was the most beautiful thing she had
ever seen. Among other things, she was given a tour of the ship and
even allowed to try driving it! (But she had to sign the Official
Secrets Act afterwards!) Her name is Carol L Workman and she was 20 at
the time. 20 years ago on May 4th 1982, when she heard that the HMS
Sheffield had been hit, she was so upset that she cried for two days.
She nearly cried when she told us about it in assembly 20 years on.
She's probably really upset today because all the memories will be
flooding back to her, so if anybody was on board that day and remembers
when they rescued her, and even if they weren't on board but fought in
the Falklands War and think they can say something to make her feel
better, please e-mail

For Information I have just Rx an E-mail from the XO HMS Newcastle
(Tiffy Prentice ex L/S(EW)) who earlier today passed over the position
where HMS Sheffield was hit. The ship stopped and held a short memorial
service. This is what he sent:-

Bobby,
Hi mate hope everything is going well and your still your old self!
Just a quick note to say that we carried out a short memorial service
and wreath laying today as we passed over the posn HMS SHEFFIELD was
hit. It had been our intention to do it on the 4th but unfortunately
our programme changed slightly.
Be rest assured our thoughts were and will be to all those who suffered
and who still do. Gods speed Bobby and please pass our thoughts on to
any others that you still have contact with.

Hello Bob, I met you in the Park Tavern with your brother and Anton
Friebel the weekend the Queen Mum had died, as I was training for the
street lining of her funeral. Brilliant site you got here, I am
surprised it took me this long for me to find it. I definately intend
to be at the reunion on the 15th June, work permitting of course, and
while I'm here, are there any of the old Glasgow boys here who'll be
there? Good luck to all veterans and hopefully we'll get together for a
good day out and remember our fallen comrades. Cheers now, and Bob,
drop us an email when you get time, ta. The Rabster.....

Your reunion is being advertised in the News section of the HMS JUNO
website at: www.hms-juno.co.uk

That News section is updated every week (usually by Sat evening) and
contains up to date naval news from the previous week.

I collect most of the information from The News, Portsmouth and credit
Richard Hargreaves, the Defence Correspondent.

A wide spectrum of naval affairs is covered and sometimes a bit of
history.

Pusser Hills adds pics and graphics, so that it is very well presented -
and I promise you, always a very good read.

From the HMS JUNO shipmates:

Have a very good 20th reunion at Portsmouth.

remember rightly he may have been the person who gave me his woolly

(Chops(R))? See you all on the 4th May.

26/Mar/2002:19:35:53

Hi! Bob remembers me as I was his DO when we both moved on to HMS
SOUTHAMPTON for our second and third trips 'down south'. Most of you
will not as I was only on loan from HMS HERMES for a couple of a couple
of weeks before the fateful day. I was the second fighter controller,
backing up Colin Haley, and only got to know those in my corner of the
Ops room in my defence watch. I did conduct the singing of 'always
look on the bright side of life' amongst the spare hands up on the
fo'c'sle whilst we looked after the injured.
I can't be there on the 4th as I'm already taking family and friends to
the Army/Navy match (oragnised before I knew of the reunion and too
late to cancel) but hope to meet many of you at St Anne's and at
Eastney on the Sunday. Dit warning red eh?

where we were from - HMS SHEFFIELD. I hope to make the reunion so
hopefully I'll see you all at there.

I don't think my earlier sign-in went anywhere - so here goes again.
Doug Laybourne told me about the site, and I've really enjoyed the
visit. The photos bring back a lot of memories, and it's good to know
that people are staying in touch with each other - I wish I had. I
kept most of my photos with me... for safety (good one, eh!) I sent a
few slides back from Athens though, so I'll search out any that might
be of interest to other people visiting the site. Does anyone know
where ex-AB Bungy Edwards, or Ricky the steward ended up? Anyone got
any photos of any of the sports teams or events?

We are constantly updating the forum on our particular Sheffield
website, designed to investigate the loss of the ship in the Falklands
war and back this up with a petition to the Sec of State for Defence,
to open a new inquiry.
Your help is needed a.s.a.p.
Although you can see that a lot of insight has been gained (check out
the Forum), we still need more witnesses to come forward to establish
more of the facts.
A crucial witness has been located who was on the bridge at the time,
but we need someone to tell us WHO ELSE WAS MANNING THE BRIDGE at the
relevant time.

For those who may be worried that they might be called upon as a
witness, there is no need to worry un-necessarily.
The best that we are likely to achieve, with sufficient support from
Sheffield veterans, is for a petition to be presented at No.10,
followed up with witnessing questions to the minister in the house of
commons that afternoon, and hopefully followed by a short inquiry by
the Commons Defence Select Commit
