- By European standards the Great
Capricorn Beetle (Le Grand Capricorne du
Chêne) is enormous, spanning the palm of an
adult's hand (see: http://www.insectes-net.fr/cerdo/cerd2.htm ). This legally protected rarity
has a stronghold in southern France where these
photographs were taken. Males have much longer antennae
than the female shown here. Note that the beetle was
placed on the trunk of a conifer to be photographed
having been removed from a camp site for its own safety.
The larvae live in mature Oak Quercus
sp. and the evidence of
their presence is relatively easy to detect as large
holes are excavated through the bark and piles of sawdust
accumulated at the base of the host trees. The adults do
not stray far from their original emergence site and in
most cases they probably lay their eggs on the same tree.
