________________________________ Beetles 27 - Weevils

WEEVIL
Liophloeus tessulatus
- The Weevil Liophloeus
tessulatus is one of the larger and perhaps
more recognisable members of the large Family
Curculionidae, more than 400 members of
which reside in the UK (a third of the European total).
This flightless beetle is nocturnal in its habits and
according to K. W. Harde in his informative (and very
nicely illustrated) 'A Field Guide in Colour
to Beetles' Blitz Editions, 1998.
ISBN 1-85605-448-9 the species reproduces by
parthenogenesis at low altitudes and sexually at high
altitudes. This must cause some confusion for any beetles
living at a medium altitute!
