PEREGRINE FALCON Falco
peregrinus
- A real slice of luck here -
the photographer had decided to go out to a local park on
the day of the Royal Wedding on the offchance that the
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft might fly in
his direction. They didn't, but as he checked the
metering using a grey pylon against a bright pale sky in
order to determine any necessary over-exposure for a very
black Lancaster bomber he noticed the outline of a raptor
in his test photograph. In all probability this would
normally have been a Kestrel Falco
tinnunculus, but as the image was enlarged
it became apparent that the bird had dark moustachial
stripes and that it was in fact a juvenile Peregrine,
a species that he had never seen in the area before!
Moments after identifying the falcon a Sparrowhawk
Accipiter nisus was
also photographed circling overhead and this proved to be
quite a serendipitous walk. When the Peregrine suddenly
took off the camera was pre-set to deliberately
over-expose the images and rather than making any attempt
to adjust the camera and miss the opportunity the
photographs were taken at this setting and then adjusted
to the correct exposure using Photoshop Elements 8
software - one of the great advantages of digital
photography. This was never going to be a great
photograph in such poor light but it was certainly a
useful record shot!
