• A miscellaneous selection of British diesel locomotives is illustrated in TOPS Classification order carrying a variety of British Rail and private owner liveries. A few of the older locomotives have had very extended working lives, in particular the pristine EWS Class 08 (here captured from video) 37 406 (equally freshly painted and striking against a leaden stormy sky) and the former Fragonset's stalwart 33 103 'Swordfish' (named after the WW2 biplane that played such a significant role as a torpedo bomber during naval engagements). Quite why the snowploughs were fitted remains a mystery but the modifications for third rail activities are certainly evident in this photograph. Perhaps it is easier to leave them in situ than it is to remove them, although this locomotive would have travelled far more widely under private ownership than when allocated to a single Region. Several of the other locomotives shown have been preserved since these pictures were taken or regularly used on special rail tours and some (especially the Class 47s) have received distinctive liveries. The exception is the 'Peak' which had already been preserved. No. 33 008 'Eastleigh' spent the latter period of its British Rail career painted green. The two tone grey grey Class 60 shown here prior to EWS employment has recently been repainted in a handsome new red DB Schenker livery and renamed 'The Territorial Army Centenary'. Royal claret liveried No. 67005 was captured in the process of carrying out an uncharacteristically mundane duty of heading a tracklaying train rather than hauling a royal personage! Many Voyager units have lost their handsome original livery following the change of franchise for cross country services although the electrically powered Pendolino units have retained theirs.

• Update, May 2009: 47 712 and 33 103 have now been acquired by new owners and photographs of these locomotives in their new liveries may be seen on Railway Web Page 31 - Eastleigh 100.
