- An unabashed display of
colourful liveries, all expertly applied, was a
significant feature of the splendid Eastleigh 100
display, although by a sad coincidence the event
coincided with the closure of another major depot with a
great history, namely Old Oak Common.
These diesel and electro-diesel
locomotives are shown in order of TOPS
classification and not every example seen at the
display could be included on a single page. Some of these
locomotives are owned privately by preservationists and
others are in current active service. It was very much to
the credit of the organisers that every exhibit had been
positioned so that it could be photographed essentially
unobstructed either by other locomotives or the large
number of visitors. Despite their efforts there do appear
to have been reports of selfish behaviour by certain
photographers and there was really no excuse for their
alleged rudeness, particularly as one of the most
important prerequisites for a good photographer is
patience. It is sometimes difficult to avoid getting in
the line of fire, particularly when there are cameras
pointing at you from all directions, but on no occasion
was it necessary to do anything other than wait when
taking pictures of these inanimate objects. With very few
exceptions most of the many thousands of visitors were
polite and considerate and simply enjoying a very
interesting day out. With the exception of the fictitious
'Loadhaul' livery oddly applied to 50 035 (50
135!) 'Ark Royal' all of the
above colours would appear to have been legitimately
carried during the service life of these locomotives. The
presence of high intensity headlights is a necessary
modification for compliance with modern health and safety
regulations. The Class 37 locomotives in
particular have received many modifications to their
superstructure, the most noticeable of which is the
plating covering their original headcode displays -
indeed all of the above examples show distinct
differences. The vintage Class 08
locomotive (originally D4010) was not
part of the display as it was actively performing its
duties in the yard by Eastleigh Station. Some of these
locomotive designs have been hugely successful and they
had very lengthy service lives prior to the mass
importation of the standardised General Motors
Class 66. There are still a number of 08
shunters in regular use even though the design dates back
to 1953, and the adoption and refurbishment of some of
the older locomotives by private companies has
significantly extended the active life of a select number
of Class 20 (built from 1957), 33
(1960), 37 (1961), 47 (1962)
and 73 (JA 1962, JB 1965) locomotives.
Indeed such is the ubiquity of the latter that
comparatively few Class members have actually been
scrapped, with many locomotives finding their way to
preserved railways. The most surprising omission from
this display was the out of favour Class 60,
perhaps because only nine of the 100-strong Class are
still in DB-Schenker service. It must be
hoped that the National Railway Museum
would consider this British-designed locomotive to be of
sufficient importance for an example to be included as a
future part of the National Collection.
- It should be noted that preserved
locomotives undergo significant periods of inactivity for
maintenance and the appearance of photographs of any
particular example on these pages does not necessarily
mean that it is currently operational. Newly restored
locomotives may be used as replacements, locations or
ownerships may change and if a locomotive undergoes a
heavy overhaul it may be out of action for several years.
This process is immensely expensive and labour-intensive
and preserved railways always require significant
financial assistance from visitors and benefactors, so
any contributions towards the uptake of these marvellous
machines will always be welcomed by their owners.
