Eastleigh 100 Open Day 23rd May 2009 - Bulleid Pacifics

Rebuilt Merchant Navy Classmates. 35028 'Clan Line' is seen at Waterloo heading the 'Eastleigh Centenarian' and the Mid Hants Railway's 35005 'Canadian Pacific' is shown on static display at the Eastleigh 100 Open Day. 'Clan Line' put in a very spirited performance having been given clearance for an early morning high-speed run down the main line. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6-igXIGo6s for some impressive footage of this excursion.

A trio of Bulleid Pacifics, from left to right Rebuilt Merchant Navy Class 35005 'Canadian Pacific', currently out of ticket on the Mid Hants Railway and in need of an overhaul, Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 34070 'Manston' and Rebuilt West Country Class 34028 'Eddystone'. The last two (Light Pacific) locomotives are currently based at the Swanage Railway. Both were in light steam and offering footplate visits, always an enjoyable experience. These locomotives were early withdrawals from BR service and they have recently been restored from Barry wrecks to fully operational condition by the ever industrious Southern Locomotives Ltd.: http://www.southern-locomotives,co.uk. Other ongoing projects include the restoration of further Bulleids and once their work is completed no less than eight reconstructions from scrap condition will have been performed. Rebuilt Battle of Britain Class 34053 'Sir Keith Park' and Rebuilt West Country Class 34010 'Sidmouth' are both long-stored scrapyard condition locomotives. The former was originally retained as a source of spare parts but it is now being rebuilt as a tribute to the Second World War Fighter Command hero after which it was named. Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 34072 '257 Squadron' is also due for overhaul following a 13 year period of stalwart service as the Swanage Railway's flagship locomotive. The division into 'West Countries'and 'Battle of Britains' is purely a manner of nomenclature and there are no structural differences between the unrebuilt or rebuilt locomotives of either 'Class'.

A view of the fiercely burning fire in Rebuilt West Country Class 34028 'Eddystone' - the heat would have been sufficient to melt the plastic components on an unprotected camera. There was a spot of near-deafening over-indulgence with the incredibly loud whistle, although the later exchanges with the departing 'Clan Line' were rather nostalgic.

Shouldn't that be a fireman in the cab of 34028?

Front end of air-smoothed Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 34070 'Manston'. Note how uncomplicated the rods are when compared with those of the rebuilt locomotives. The original locomotives had a reputation for very free steaming, but unfortunately the contents of the (very inaccessible) oil-bath surrounding the innovative Bulleid chain-driven mechanism had a tendency to catch fire and the chains themselves tended to slacken, just a couple of the more significant reasons behind the rather drastic decision to rebuild the Bulleid Pacific locomotives. All of the Merchant Navies were rebuilt prior to the end of 1959, but fortunately for the preservationists with a preference for the original design only 60 locomotives out of the Class of 110 Light Pacifics received similar treatment before a decision was made to stop the expensive rebuilding process prior to the withdrawal of steam locomotives on the Southern Region of British Railways. As a consequence of this and the transfer of many of the earlier withdrawals to Barry Docks the rebuilt and original versions of the Light Pacifics are equally represented as preserved locomotives with 10 of each still in existence - although some may never steam again. The photographer is unbiased - he likes both.

Rebuilt Merchant Navy Class 35005 'Canadian Pacific', Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Class 34070 'Manston' and Rebuilt West Country Class 34028 'Eddystone'. Such sightings of all three Classes lined up together are a genuine rarity these days.

'Canadian Pacific' probably won't be travelling under its own power for some time...

...unlike sister locomotive Rebuilt Merchant Navy 35028 'Clan Line', seen here stopping for water at Haslemere on the return journey to London

Rebuilt Merchant Navy 35028 'Clan Line' shortly after arrival at Victoria Station - where the locomotive was greeted by a noisy (albeit somewhat bemused) throng of jubilant Gillingham football fans returning from a victorious play-off. Things had quietened down a bit by the time that this long-exposure photograph was taken. Although the return back to London was by a more circuitous route the faster parts of the journey were still impressive. Much credit is due to UK Railtours: http://www.ukrailtours,com/, the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society: http://www.clan-line.org.uk/ and of course the hard working locomotive crew and support team for the success of this excursion and to The Railway Magazine and Knights Rail Services for organising the Eastleigh 100 event.
