Several atmospheric photographs as 'Princess Elizabeth' builds up a head of steam following replenishment of coal and water supplies.

The red reversing light should probably have been removed before the locomotive started moving but it had presumably been switched off by this time

The clearance for a 'Princess Royal' is very limited under the footbridge - probably only a few inches to spare!

                 The sheer length and elegance of the locomotive is evident in this photograph.

• This sequence of photographs was taken on 6th March 2010, firstly following the arrival of Stanier Princess Royal Class Pacific 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' at Olympia and subsequently at Clapham Junction where preparations were made for the return north from London Euston. A 400mm telephoto lens was used for the close-ups as this enables frame-filling photographs to be captured from a distance. Shortly before departure Merchant Navy Class 35028 'Clan Line' hauled the VSOE Pullman stock through another platform providing the rare and these days rather marvellous spectacle of two top link pacific locomotives from different regions in steam together at the busiest main line station in the UK.

• It should be noted that preserved locomotives undergo significant periods of inactivity for maintenance and the appearance of photographs of any particular example on these pages does not necessarily mean that it is currently operational. Newly restored locomotives may be used as replacements, locations or ownerships may change and if a locomotive undergoes a heavy overhaul it may be out of action for several years. This process is immensely expensive and labour-intensive and preserved railways always require significant financial assistance from visitors and benefactors, so any contributions towards the uptake of these marvellous machines will always be welcomed by their owners.
