• Another fascinating selection of black and white images has been supplied by Roger Hawkins, this time of subjects that he had photographed during a trip to Portugal in September 1969, more than a year after the cessation of steam in the UK. This collection includes some wonderful veterans that must have seen many years of service. Some of the older locomotives were in store or derelict and Roger believes that there was probably an intention at the time to retain some of these for preservation. As with the pictures of French locomotives (see link below) these images have been stored as small prints for about 40 years. These have now been scanned, enlarged and 'tweaked' with modern photographic software, in this case Nikon Capture NX. Some photographs have been converted to black and white if this has enabled a more clearly defined image to be presented and others have been reproduced in 'colour'. At least one of the broad (1668mm) gauge locomotives CP 003 (built 1890) is known to survive in preservation. Examples still exist of several of the illustrated classes, including Esslingen metre gauge CP E103 (built 1907 - the 'E' prefix identifies narrow gauge) and Hartmann 1668mm gauge CP 135 (1881) and Henschel CP 553 (1924). However, it must be remembered that there is a very significant fire risk in Portugal, so modern day steam-hauled operations are a rarity and most of the preserved locomotives have been retained as static exhibits.
