Our 2011 exhibition is now in the planning stages. Its title will be ”Words, Wires and Waves to the World Wide Web”. Progress report later - but we will have something ‘up and running’ for National Science and Engineering Week in March.

Our 2010 exhibition was called ‘More Great Scots who Changed the World’, It featured a local heroine, the great 19th century mathematician and astronomer, Mary Somerville, and included the pioneering work of a few amazing Scottish inventors and innovators: people like Maxwell, Baird, Bell, Watson-Watt…. The Exhibition spanned the years from Lord George Murray’s pre-electric telegraph (1796) to a demonstration of the latest state-of-the-art cameras found in mobile phones (currently in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s smallest!)  first designed in Edinburgh by Dave Renshaw and the late Peter Denyer. The company has been taken over by ST Microelectronics – but the design activity is still based in Edinburgh.

The Harry Matthews Memorial Lecture, given this year by Neil Grubb

The Esk Valleys: Hidden Gems

Neil Grubb takes a tour of the Esk Valleys, illustrating the diversity of bird, animal and plant life over the course of a year. He focuses on some of the less well known birds that are all around us: birds of prey, woodpeckers, nuthatches, kingfishers and many other species that illustrate the rich drama, colour and sound of the Scottish bird life that is on our doorstep.

As well as slides, the talk includes a short film about peregrine falcons, and a high definition documentary about birds in the Esk Valleys.

Admission to MoC members is free, with the AGM starting promptly at 10.30.

Charge to non-members for the 11.30 lecture is £3.00 and this includes a full Cheese & Wine Buffet Lunch!

Both talks are open to the public.  To reserve a seat or for further information, please  e-mail mocenquiries@tiscali.co.uk   or phone 01506 823 424
