Indieville
A flute and drum improv unit, the sound of Part Wild Horses Mane on Both Sides should have a stark sound and a love-it-or-leave-it appeal. The deal with PWHMOBS is that they bend and shape their handful of elements into something that goes further than mere free jazz passages. Distorted vocal sounds and fx swabbed instruments, the bones of their performance briefly puff out with blood. Their sound on this 25 minute live cut is the kind of contradictory performance youŐd expect from these kinds of unplugged-mind performers. ItŐs a hell of an unfastened ride, from the opening prancing wild steed steps of the percussion through gentle almost pastoral moments. The percussive playing of Pascal Nichols is superb, he lays out a real slinky clatter with rhythms solidifying and disappearing all over the shop. The pieceŐs real highlight is a glorious swelling two thirds in, one of those perfectly accidentally perfect moments. Salford, so much to answer for. Or something.
Vital Weekly
New hand-numbered edition of 80 copies album from the duo of Pascal Nichols and Kelly Jones, with individually hand painted sleeves. Live In Salford situates the group in a more traditionally nuanced free jazz setting than on previous releases, moving them out of space and into a room where you can really focus on the interaction and the mass of space that they carve between them. KellyŐs flute playing is a little more aggressive and Pascal responds in kind, pushing the rhythms a little harder and launching indecipherable vocal communications via his antique radio receiver. Every PWHMOBS release is a mandatory purchase at VT.
