Message from the Archdeacon of Gloucester, the Venerable Geoffrey Sidaway
Passion for God's world
We are all responsible for the care of the wonderful world God has made for us to live in. And if we exploit it, abuse or misuse it, then our children and grandchildren will be the ones to suffer.
We know that we humans are polluting and squandering the resources of the earth at a pace that far exceeds the rate of natural renewal. We are ruining our habitat and we have perhaps begun to realise that if we go on this way, we are capable of making the earth cold, dark and uninhabitable. Whether our attention is focussed on animals, the rain forest, the ozone layer or pollution - the cause of the problem is the same - men and women have demanded more than the planet can give.
Concern for our future demands that we exercise our stewardship over nature with less extravagance and greed. In this technology driven age it is too easy to forget that humankind is part of nature and not apart from it. That is why we should seek to work with the grain of nature in everything we do.
We can become paralysed by the sheer scale of the problem and the thought that we alone can't make a difference. And so we draw back, leaving others to act. It isn't easy, but all of us can and should, set about reducing our carbon footprint. We live in a beautiful world and it makes sense to look after it - because it is God's world and our home.
PCCs can take some simple steps to make their buildings greener - installing solar panels, ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers. For more information about becoming greener, see Randwick Village Hall's website www.randwick.org.uk/Orgs/hall.htm or for details of Withington's zero carbon church see www.gloucester.anglican.org/news/press.
appears to have taken this experience, and found it's changed her life. Her letter is full of enthusiasm for her experience, the people she met there, and the things she's learnt. The trip seems to have made her realise that there are many things she could do - with work - which she couldn't even imagine before.
We wish all these young people well, and pray that they each come to find happiness in their futures.
