Newbold News
Tuck yourself under your duvet on Christmas Eve, tune your wireless to BBC Radio 3, and have a listen to a happy experiment:
A BBC radio studio, 8 hours, and a storyteller, a singer and a percussionist who were all completely new to each other. The producer said “You have until 6pm, the theme is Winter, off you go.” We read, improvised, wrote (and got to play a massive gong), and by 6pm we'd come up with A Midwinter Tale; a sonic journey into a wild winterscape at the turning of the day. Our primary inspiration for this journey came from the late and much missed Duncan Williamson; whose collection A Thorn in the King's Foot yielded a story which both galvanized and anchored us, and which appears - respectfully re-imagined - at the heart of this windswept and wintry piece. So let us take you by the hand and lead you outside into a stormy landscape that will hopefully set your spines tingling...just a little bit.
BBC Radio 3, The Late Junction, 24th December 11.15pm-1am.
Storyteller: Debs Newbold, Singer: Mary Hampton, Percussionist: Dave Price.
And thank you Duncan.
