Storytelling for Schools
Creativity improves pupils' self-esteem, motivation and achievement. - (QCA)
Work in Schools
Debs has ten years' experience working in schools as an artist; five of these have been spent as a senior practitioner for Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. She has told stories, created performances and run workshops in hundreds of schools in the South East and all over the UK.
Storytelling to Inspire Creative Learning Within the National Curriculum...
Stories can bring a class together, delight and inspire them, or open a new window onto a specific topic.
- A 45 minute session of stories, told interactively with plenty of participation, can help pupils develop confidence and can positively affect attainment targets in Speaking and Listening.
- A set of folktales culled from the rural history of Britain can bring in aspects of science, history, or citizenship.
Debs has worked extensively with Key Stages 1 and 2 in a number of education settings, and has acquired an understanding of much of the curriculum for these Key Stages. She would be happy to talk about designing a visit to your class that would suit your needs.
And For Shakespeare in Particular...
You've planned to study Romeo and Juliet with your Year 4 class, but how on earth do you begin?
For Key stage 2, 3 or 4 classes about to begin work on a new Shakespeare play, a 40 minute storytelling performance of that text from Debs – a storyteller, teacher and lecturer for Shakespeare's Globe of five years standing – is a dynamic and engaging springboard into the subject. Debs is passionate about Shakespeare!
A workshop> designed to introduce the students to the text in a friendly, energetic and active way could accompany this also. Again, Debs would be more than happy to talk to you about this...
And Just So's You Know...
Debs is experienced in work across the age ranges from Foundation Stage to Undergraduate Level, and is a skilled CPD tutor, leading workshops for teachers and PGCE students alike. She is fully CRB checked.
