Jenny Henderson in 'Dementia in Scotland' - the newsletter of Alzheimer Scotland -

The first part of Malcolm Goldsmith's book is aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the needs of people with dementia and their carers from a Christian perspective. The second part addresses the role that clergy and their congregations may have in supporting and maintaining the religious and spiritual dimensions of people with dementia and their carers.

There is a concise account of the current thinking on dementia, it is well explained and concentrates on a person centred approach. The powerful use of quotations adds to the understanding of the person behind the dementia. Throughout the book there are thought provoking topics such as 'why me' and the neglected issues of spiritual and religious aspects of care which are dealt with in an open and honest way.

I was pleased to find many practical tips, including communication and coping with visiting and although written from a Christian perspective, I think the book would be helpful for a much wider audience.
