Our Gliders

The roots of the club were formed by members from Bardney, the club at Bardney was formed from club members from RAF Swinderby in 1966. Our ‘founders’ moved to Strubby Airfield in 1978 which became known as the Strubby G.C. We changed our name back to the Lincolnshire G.C. back in March 1992.

We are very much a self-help club without any employees, which keeps down the cost of flying and encourages a friendly atmosphere sometimes lacking in the larger professional clubs. The club fleet includes two two-seat training gliders (2 x K13’s) one single-seat glider (ASK 8) and the latest addition is an Astir CS; all housed in an open ended hangar. The K13’s were recently acquired in 2004 as a further improvement for the club. In addition several privately owned gliders are based at Strubby.

Gliding at Strubby takes place every Weekend, Wednesday and Bank Holiday throughout the year, and on evenings in the summer (May - August) we fly groups of visitors, friends and family.

Members realise at an early stage, that they need to spend at least one full day each weekend to progress at a reasonable rate, to achieve their first solo. If, like many club members you could be free to fly on every day, going solo will be that much earlier and can be counted in weeks rather than months. It is not always possible to book flights in advance as gliding depends on the weather and we always attempt to make the best of each day given the support of the club members.

It needs a team to prepare the gliders and equipment before flying, and to put them away at the end of the day. Therefore club members are encouraged to spend most of each day on the airfield and flying is normally in order of arrival, with those that have flown earlier having the chance to fly again. Students are normally allowed to fly three launches at a time, with more possible after everyone has flown. The costs are very reasonable and cheaper than many other sports.

The Club is registered as a Company belonging to the members who elect an Executive Committee at an Annual General Meeting. It is non-profit making and all revenue is used to meet operational costs and to fund new developments.

Most of all, the whole ethos of the club is designed around people enjoying gliding, and having fun. But you will never know, unless you give it a try?

Go on, Go Gliding!
