Kirklees Racial Equality Council

2.5% of the UK population is Muslim.

In Dewsbury it is approximately 30%, yet among the vast majority of Christians there is much ignorance about Islam also knowledge of Christianity among Muslims is minimal. It is good to live in a world which has rich diversity however there is the danger of racial hatred and religious conflict. It is so important for neighbouring religious communities to know and respect each other.

Dewsbury Baptist Church has stepped up its fight against racism by joining Kirklees Racial Equality Council. It is a voluntary organisation working towards a just society which gives everyone an equal chance to learn and live free from the fear of racial harassment and violence.
People need to be encouraged to bridge the gap of ignorance among faith communities and ethnic minorities in Britain. It can be dangerous when people live alongside each other but keep their distance. Ignorance fuels fear while education nourishes understanding. Our active involvement with Kirklees Racial Equality Council aims to assist in this educational process, faking a small but significant step towards living in greater harmony. As Christians we have a particular call to love our neighbours. We share a common denominator with Muslims, who are the predominant ethnic minority in Kirklees. Muslims and Christians are both people of faith and seek to serve God. It is our expression of faith which remains different. Inter-faith dialogue need not dilute our faiths to a lowest common denominator it should seek to nurture respect in order to live in greater harmony. Unless people are rooted in their own faith and culture they will end up having nothing to say to one another. 1 remain faithfully committed to following the ways of Jesus Christ, much in the same way a Muslim seeks to be faithful to Islam.
