Andrew Broderick
Over the last few years, my work has focussed on developing a spiritual bond and physical affinity with the natural environment and the creatures that inhabit it. Incorporating natural materials and elements from the earth such as mud, soil and home-made charcoal, I make drawings concerning human and animal imagery, and create a dream-like scenario which can awaken our imagination and help us access a deeper awareness of our belonging to the earth.
The process of drawing is very tactile and physical, and lines and marks possess and importance in themselves, often existing for their own sake and not necessarily for the purpose of representation. As a result, randomly placed lines and marks can suggest forms and shapes and can tease out subconscious ideas and symbols. My paintings usually change during creation and differ radically from the original planned drawing.
I recently have begun to focus on portraiture, rendering human and animal heads in this energetic and expressive approach.
Fundamentally, they are about spirit, process and the earth.
