Robert Dolman

Nabokov wrote “ I cannot separate the aesthetic pleasure of seeing a butterfly and the scientific pleasure of knowing what it is.” I cannot separate the aesthetic sublime and dynamic of the external morphology of the landscape and the knowledge of the internal fabric and structure and the history of the geology.

Yet the landscape almost requires the figure – the human dimension - and this is where time comes in. My work explores the episodal character of the two different time scales involved – both can be said to be made up of relatively brief periods of activity interspersed with more extensive times of calm, the whole punctuated by dislocations and unconformities. But human existence is a mere crack of light between two eternities of darkness, and minute sections of that light will represent the occasional and ephemeral moments or sparks of emotion, insight and direction.
