David Mekins

Grant, aided by a SMART Award for research and technology, I rented space at the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, to develop a method of high resolution printing on glass. I studied many forms of decoration for glass as part of my MA Design degree at University of Northumbria. With considerable technical experience accrued over ten years in the glass industry as an electrical engineer, I am now a “Designer / Maker” of illuminated, kiln formed, glass panels working from a home based studio/workshop at Sedgefield.

My kiln formed glass panels function as a robustly constructed wall light based on the energy efficient 2D compact fluorescent lamp and are made and tested to conform with the BS/ EN 60598 standard for luminaires. Artistically, the decoration may be abstract or designed to a given theme, using my own or provided artwork. I take inspiration from my previous industrial experiences, heritage and nature. Alternatively, the decoration may be screen printed, to be used for commemorative or opening ceremony plaques. By fusing many layers of glass and colours together, a tactile and visually attractive picture is formed. The glass panels may be used singly or grouped together to form a spectacular sculptural feature. More recently, I have designed a range of affordable, decorative glass bowls
