Sue Warlock
My work sets out to subvert innocent childhood motifs in order to explore the darker and often dysfunctional elements of childhood. I often use broken dolls as metaphors for the damaged child and include objects which have a personal symbolism for me. I want the viewer to be seduced by the beauty of painted surface and yet at the same time disturbed by the subject matter. My sculptures are dramatic, disturbing and intentionally confrontational. I have been influenced by the work of Paula Rego, Edward Kienholz, Eva Hesse, Kiki Smith, and Hans Bellmer as well as the Austrian hyper realist artist Gottfreid Helnwein.
I am currently studying for my BA Honours in Fine Art at Newcastle University and have exhibited extensively across the Northeast both in solo exhibitions and With East Durham Artists Network (EDAN)
