Ken Watts
Born London, lived and worked in the north east since 1959. Make paintings and drawings of northeast towns and cities. Paintings that had their routes in pop art of the sixties, but gradually became more complex and technical through the years, as I acquired a better understanding of colour tone and its relationship to perspective and space. Figures are used in some the paintings and not in others, but in all I include everyday paraphernalia, of property for sale, street and shop names alongside authoritarian colour coded lights and road and pavement instructional markings. No dog has polluted nor has have humans discard their unwanted items upon my highways and byways. Shadows cut across pave and up brick walls being s harp and in focus through to infinity. I enjoy portraying abstract designs that appear by accident when pave or cobble are over painted by ground workers practicing their trade I often wonder were the workmen who built our town and cities the artists? And am I just a visual chronicler
