DFDS/LD LINES JOIN FORCES

On 10 January DFDS/LD Lines announced that they would, as soon as possible, start to operate a Dover – Calais service using two French crewed ships under the French flag. DFDS is putting Senior Vice President Carsten Jensen in charge of building and expanding this new business in the English Channel in partnership with LD Lines. It is thought that the new service will use LD Lines’ ships and not the ships of SeaFrance.

EUROTUNNEL WANT TO BE A SHIPPING COMPANY

Eurotunnel plan to buy assets belonging to SeaFrance (three of the ships) and lease them back to the workers co-operative Scop, which was unsuccessful in its own bid to take over the failing operator. A spokesman said Eurotunnel was awaiting more information about the valuation of the fleet before it submitted a valued bid.

SPIRIT OF FRANCE ON HER WAY

P&O Ferries will take delivery of SPIRIT OF FRANCE on Tuesday 24 January during a handover ceremony at the STX Europe shipyard in Rauma, Finland. STAGECOACH PLANS FOR HOVERCRAFT SERVICE SCUPPERED

Stagecoach released a statement on 9 December that the proposal to run a hovercraft service across the Firth of Forth has been killed off by Edinburgh Council's refusal of planning consent for a proposed terminal at Portobello. Stagecoach had been working on their plans for a hovercraft service across the Forth since 2007.

DFDS SEAWAYS

DFDS Seaways have been named as winners of the 2011 World's Leading Ferry Operator award.

21 November 2011

P&O - FERRY OPERATOR OF THE YEAR

P&O Ferries was named Ferry Operator of the Year at the British Travel Awards 2011, which is widely regarded as the `Oscars' of the travel industry. The company was also voted Best Cross Channel Operator and Best Ferry Operator (other routes) for its services from Hull to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge. More than 700,000 votes were cast by members of the public and travel trade professionals and the awards were presented at a ceremony in London hosted by writer and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth.

SEAFRANCE - TWO MONTH LIFELINE

On Nov 16 SeaFrance were thrown a two-month lifeline after the court at the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris put it into judicial liquidation, but allowed it to continue to trade until 28 January 2012. The company now has a breathing space in which to attract new offers. These offers had to be lodged by 12 December. Two bids to buy SeaFrance were on the table before the tribunal made its decision - one from a DFDS/LD Lines consortium which has offered €5 million while an employee cooperative has offered a symbolic €1 - and these were judged insufficient. By Friday 18 November however, SeaFrance services had not resumed and all their ships remained laid up.

FASTNET LINE - INTERIM EXAMINERSHIP

On 1 November the Fastnet Line Group of companies which operates the Cork - Swansea ferry service has been placed into interim examinership. The decision was made by Mr Justice Peter Kelly at a sitting of the High Court. The ferry will discontinue its service with immediate effect. However it is planned to resume the service from April to September next year. A statement confirmed that all booked passengers would be contacted and full refunds issued. A further court hearing has been set for 15 November, when the interim examiner will present a report on progress made. Fastnet Line companies are owned by the West Cork Tourism Co-operative Society Limited which was formed in April 2009 and has over 400 members who individually invested funds into the venture. A restructured viable business plan has been presented as part of the examinership process and it forecasts that the service will recommence on Friday 6 April next year until 29 September 2012. Under the new schedule, the service will not operate during the months from October to March in the future. Board members said they were committed to the long term future of the ferry service which is a key generator of tourism and related revenues for both the south west of Ireland and the southern Welsh region of the UK.

HOVERTRAVEL - SUSPENSION

On Friday 18 November the MCA suspended all Hovertravel services with immediate affect due to concerns over propeller shafts in their fleet of hovercraft. Hovertravel released the following statement:

Hovertravel can confirm that they have suspended hovercraft services with effect from 18:00 today Friday 18 November. Following an issue with a propeller on the SOLENT EXPRESS Hovercraft on 30 October, further safety checks are to be undertaken to ensure the continued safety of Hovertravel's fleet. Hovertravel is working with the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), the regulatory authority, and hopes to restore a full service as soon as possible. It is important to stress that the current fleet of hovercraft are different models to the one in service on 30 October. As a mandatory measure we are required to ensure the integrity of all our operating systems in conjunction with the MCA. The entire matter revolves around ensuring the safety of our operation. The safety of customers, crew & hovercraft are of paramount importance and Hovertravel are working with the MCA continually throughout this evening and the weekend to ensure the capability of the craft before they are returned to service. This will involve working through a number of further checks now being implemented to ensure that not only the MCA, but Hovertravel are fully satisfied that our craft are safe to operate. We are confident that with the support of the entire Hovertravel team, and the MCA we will complete this process as quickly as we can. We are currently working with Wightlink to accommodate our passengers who are already booked, to ensure they are able to cross the Solent this evening. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience this matter has caused our passengers, and are grateful for their understanding. We will update our website www.hovertravel.com, and our terminal staff will be on duty as normal throughout the weekend to assist and update this situation. It must be stressed we will only commence operations when Hovertravel and the MCA are entirely satisfied.

Services resumed on Monday 21 November.

9 September 2011

ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY

Sad news was received on 9 August when it was reported that the PANAGIA SOUMELA, ex LADY OF MANN had been towed to the beaches of Aliaga in Turkey for scrapping – truly the end of an era.

The gearbox problems with the MANANNAN continued into the beginning of September though the Company were hopeful of a resolution of the difficulty sooner rather than later.

It has also been reported that the Company have sent a crew, under the command of Captain Allan Albiston, to Greece to bring the SNAEFELl back to UK and Manx waters. It would appear that the demise charter of the vessel has not gone according to plan.

STENA LINE

On 10 August Stena celebrated the 30th anniversary of the maiden voyage of STENA CALEDONIA, as the ST DAVID, between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire.

It has also been announced that the new ships for the Cairnryan to Belfast route will have the rather unimaginative names of STENA SUPERFAST VII and STENA SUPERFAST VIII.

On 30 August Stena Line announced that the HSS service between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire would in future only be seasonal and would end on 13 September for the winter.

WAVERLEY EXCURSIONS

Rough seas and stormy weather have severely hampered the operations of WAVERLEY and BALMORAL. The BALMORAL’s August programme in the Irish Sea was fairly successful, only the Garlieston sailing having to be cancelled. However the extra sailings planned for September in the Irish Sea and the Bristol Channel were wiped out by severe weather and severe anticipated weather and the ship went for lay up to Bristol on 9 September.

The WAVERLEY’s programme on the South coast has also been disrupted by the severe weather.

CALEDONIAN MACBRAYNE

The SATURN was busy towards the end of August after finishing her Ardrossan season. She graced two of her old routes, on the 20th helping out on Wemyss Bay to Rothesay sailings for the Bute Games (in passenger mode only) and then on the 27th, in passenger mode only again, helping to service the Gourock to Dunoon route for the Cowal Games weekend. She used the “new” linkspan at Dunoon.

7 August 2011

ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY

More woes for the fast craft MANANNAN manifested themselves from about 17 July onwards. After several sailings are seen to be taking longer than timetabled the Company stated that the ship would for the foreseeable future be running on reduced power due to another gearbox failing, this time on the port side outer engine. The Company issued its regrets at the situation, saying they were particularly disappointed as all four gearboxes had been refurbished during the winter by approved agents of the manufacturer. The Liverpool to Douglas sailings during this period will now take over three hours, the ship averaging about 25 knots on passage. Other routes are, of course, similarly affected.

SEAFRANCE

It is announced that a joint bid has been launched by LD Lines and DFDS for control of certain aspects of Seafrance. It is not clear what parts of Seafrance are of interest to the joint bidders.

ISLE OF SARK SHIPPING COMPANY

The company’s main passenger vessel, the BON MARIN DE SARK like the MANANNAN, has suffered gearbox failure and has had to be taken out of service. She is temporarily replaced by the BOURNEMOUTH BELLE, on charter. It is noted that the BOURNEMOUTH BELLE is usually taking the morning sailing which is favoured by day trippers. She is running in conjunction with the SARK VENTURE.

STENA LINE

After receiving clearance from the competition authorities with regard ro the takeover of the two Irish Sea routes from DFDS, Stena Line are renaming the four ships involved the STENA LAGAN, STENA MERSEY, STENA HIBERNIA and STENA SCOTIA.

7 July 2011

WAVERLEY EXCURSIONS

BALMORAL failed to start her service at Whitehaven on 25 June due to a delay in completing her dry-docking. She missed her entire Irish Sea and North Wales sailings and the beginning of her Bristol Channel service. At the time of writing she remains at Sharpness in dry dock.

WAVERLEY meanwhile started her main Clyde season on time on Friday 24 June after a difficult and curtailed Bristol Channel season.

CALEDONIAN MACBRAYNE

Continuing difficulties plague the first few weeks of the FINLAGGAN’s entry into service. On 14 June she blocked the berth at Kennacraig with ramp problems and all sailings were suspended. The HEBRIDEAN ISLES sailed from Port Askaig to Oban instead, arriving there at 19:10, departing back for Islay at 19:40. It was then decided to take the new ship out of service and she sailed for Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, where she arrived on the 21st, entering the wet basin. The ISLE OF ARRAN returned to Islay as the second ship. The FINLAGGAN finally left the Birkenhead yard on the afternoon tide of 7 July, presumably with her ramp problems sorted out.

Meanwhile on 25 June the streaker, JUPITER, was towed away from the Clyde by the tug LUNA A, bound for the Fornaes Shipbreaking yard in Denmark. She arrived at the breakers just after 16:00 (local time) on 1 July.

The end of an era occurred on 29 June when the SATURN took the last car ferry sailing from Gourock to Dunoon and back with the ex Gourock at 20:18, ex Dunoon at 20:45, arriving back at Gourock at 21:08. As well as “normal” passengers it is reported there were many enthusiasts on board to mark the sad event. The next day the SATURN relocated to Ardrossan to take up her summer of sailings to Brodick supporting the CALEDONIAN ISLES.

Meanwhile the new passenger only service run by CalMac’s stablemate Argyll Ferries got underway on 30 June. Unfortunately the new ARGYLL FLIER was not ready so the CLYDE CLIPPER was charted from Clyde Marine to support the ALI CAT. On 6 July the ARGYLL FLIER was observed at Gourock, presumably nearly ready to enter service. Both ALI CAT and ARGYLL FLIER have been bought by Argyll Ferries and have been re-registered in Glasgow.

STENA LINE

STENA ADVENTURER departed Cammell Laird, Birkenhead on the afternoon of 21 June to resume her service from Holyhead to Dublin after refit.

Meanwhile Stena Line finally received clearance from the UK competition authorities to take over the Birkenhead to Belfast service from DFDS. Stena announced that the service would be integrated into their own booking and operations procedures as soon as possible and certainly within the next tree months.

ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY

The SNAEFELL left the Cammell Laird wet basin at 21:45 on 29 June and sailed to Douglas, arriving at 01.28 on the 29th. At 03:57 she departed the Victoria Pier and headed south, bound initially for Gibraltar but instead called in at Ceuta, Spain, to refuel on 2 July. Under the command of Captain Sean Rooney she arrived at Piraeus on 5 July to take up a two month charter. However whether the charterers are Seajets or NEL who operate her sister, CYCLADES EXPRESS, ex SEACAT SCOTLAND is not clear.

P&O

On 1 July it was reported that the new SPIRIT OF FRANCE had been on sea trials in the Gulf of Bothnia.

SEAFRANCE

More problems for the ailing French Company. It is reported that their freight ship NORD PAS DE CALAIS, is to be sold resulting in the loss of 80 more jobs. And to make matters worse it is also reported that the EU is to start a formal investigation into the state aid that the Company receives.

3 June 2011

CALEDONIAN MACBRAYNE

The FINLAGGAN has had a difficult start to her CalMac career. She arrived at Oban on the evening of 22 May after a passage from Poland which included some very rough weather as she came round Cape Wrath. On 25 she was named at Port Askaig by Gina McAuglan, the Chair of the Finlaggan Trust Committee on Islay. However technical problems with a turbo-booster on one of her engines resulted in her not entering service until Wednesday 1 June when she took the 13:00 sailing from Kennacraig to Port Askaig.

Meanwhile observers have noted the demolition of JUNO at Roseneath continues apace and on 1 June CalMac announced that her sister JUPITER would also be sold for “re-cycling.”

WAVERLEY EXCURSIONS

Sadly the paddle steamer WAVERLEY did not appear for her Bank Holiday sailings on the Clyde between Friday 27 and Monday 30 May due to an over-run of work during her dry-docking at Garvel, Greenock. Her early sailings on the Bristol Channel also fell victim to this engineering over-run.

STENA LINE

It was noted on 22 May that STENA LYNX III entered dry-dock at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead for repairs and refit.

ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY

Despite some indifferent weather leading to delays and some cancellations earlier, the TT sailing programme of the Steam Packet began at the end of May. However the BEN-MY-CHREE has had one of her bow thrusters put out of action permanently due to an ingestion of debris and in strong winds needs tug assistance, especially at Heysham. The problem can only be solved after the TT period when the ship will have to dry dock, probably on two separate occasions.

CELTIC LINK

It would appear that Celtic Link are considering moving their Irish port base from Rosslare due to high berthing fees at the port. Cork or even Dublin have been mooted as a possible alternative.

4 May 2011

STENA LINE

On 11 April it was announced that the Irish Competition Authorities had given the go ahead for Stena’s acquisition of the Birkenhead to Belfast and Heysham to Belfast routes from DFDS. As yet, the British Competition Authorities have not announced any decision.

From 9 to 22 June, STENA EXPLORER will offer two round trips per day on the Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire service, covering for the refit of the STENA ADVENTURER. It is understood that the NORMAN TRADER will cover for the STENA ADVENTURER as well, but in freight only mode.

It has been announced that the NORBAY will cover for the refit of both ships on the Cairnryan to Larne service between 7 May and 10 June.

ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET

The MANANNAN operated a Round the Island sailing on the morning of Sunday 1 May. In magnificent weather the fast craft circumnavigated the Island in just over two hours, with over 200 passengers on board.

COMPAGNIE CORSAIRE

This Company has operated a service from St Malo to Guernsey and Jersey using the fast craft JACQUES CARTIER since 2007. However, due to rising fuel costs, heavy port taxes and reduced duty free receipts the service has now ceased and will not operate in 2011. The Company carried over 34,600 passengers in 2010. Their withdrawal leaves Condor Ferries in an even stronger position on Channel Island routes.

WAVERLEY EXCURSIONS

The paddle steamer WAVERLEY started her season with a successful series of cruises between Friday 22 April and Tuesday 3 May. Beginning at Glasgow, the ship operated a series of cruises from Oban, including a tendered landing at Rhum, between the 23 and 26 April and then headed north, basing herself at Kyle of Lochalsh and Raasay for three days before returning to Oban for a further four days of cruising, including another tendered landing on the Isle of Staffa. Helped by magnificent weather, the ship carried good numbers of passengers and returned to the Clyde on 3 May for dry docking at Garvel.

2 April 2011

CALMAC ON THE MERSEY

Both the HEBRIDES and the CLANSMAN have been on the River Mersey during the month of March. HEBRIDES arrived on 7 March for refit at Cammell Laird, departing on the 20th. Two days later the CLANSMAN paid a flying visit to Birkenhead arriving on the 22nd, entering dry dock but departing again at mid-day on the 23rd. She had entered the dry dock to have a leaking stern gland repaired. She was back at Oban just in time to start the summer season timetable.

It is also reported that, on the Clyde, the JUPITER left her lay up berth at Roseneath and was observed sailing for a time on the Firth. No official reason has been forthcoming for this.

SOUTER INVESTMENTS

Later in the day, at 19:00, she sailed from the Mersey for Rosyth to provide cover, in freight only mode, for the service to Zeebrugge. This was understood to be a temporary arrangement. However, on 4 February the ship was reported as sold to Stena Ro-Ro Ltd, an operating subsidiary of Stena Line. At the time of writing her future employment is uncertain.

IRISH FERRIES

On 26 January ISLE OF INISHMORE completed her refit at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead and sailed from the Mersey on the afternoon tide bound for Rosslare. Meanwhile on the 28th the OSCAR WILDE arrived on the Mersey for dry docking and refit at Birkenhead.

STENA/DFDS DEAL UNCERTAIN

The Stena / DFDS deal which saw Stena buying the Birkenhead to Belfast and Heysham to Belfast routes off DFDS have been brought into question by the Irish Competition Authority’s ruling that the deal was not properly referred to them in its early stages. This may well delay the sale in the short term.

DFDS

On 13 January DFDS announced the closure of the Birkenhead to Dublin and Heysham to Dublin services with almost immediate effect. Both routes will close completely at the end of January. DFDS blame poor profit margins and over capacity on the Irish Sea.

IRISH FERRIES

ULYSSES drydocked at Cammell Laird for her annual refit on 4 January, remaining at the Birkenhead yard until the 11th. On the 12th the ISLE OF INISHMORE and the JONATHAN SWIFT both arrived on the Mersey on the same tide to enter Cammell Laird for their annual drydocking.

It is announced on the 16th that Nortlink’s new freight vessel, the CLIPPER RACER on long term charter from Seatruck, will be re-named HELLIAR.

BAD WEATHER AGAIN

Over 7 and 8 November gale force winds and rough seas caused massive disruptions and cancellations across the UK. For example Northlink’s HJATLAND 19:00 sailing from Lerwick to Aberdeen, on the 7th, eventually diverted to Rosyth after failing to dock due to high winds. She finally berthed at Rosyth at 01:00 on the 9th! However the 21:00 Stena Line sailing from Belfast to Stranraer departed but took ten hours on passage due to the severe conditions. The STENA CALEDONIA cruised up and down the Scottish coast for five hours sheltering from the worst of the weather until conditions at Stranraer were suitable for berthing. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company cancelled the 20:45 sailing from Heysham to Douglas.
