Carfree City: Definition

Carfree cities are cities where cars have been banned or, more usually, banished right to the edge.  Instead, people get about by walking, cycling, and by public transport.

Motorbikes, scooters, vans, lorries etc. are also prohibited.  The only exceptions are vehicles for the movement of heavy goods (although they must travel slowly and give way to pedestrians) and the emergency services.

Free of the danger, pollution and noise that cars bring, carfree cities offer their residents a much higher quality of life.
