Trolleybus: Definition

A trolleybus is an electric bus which draws its power from overhead lines, in a similar way to trams.  But unlike a tram, it runs on rubber tyres and is steered by the driver.

Trolleybus

Twin poles mounted on top of the trolleybus run along two parallel overhead wires, drawing current from the first and returning it via the second.  The wheels are then powered via electric motors.

Trolleybuses are far more environmentally-friendly than diesel buses, being more efficient and emitting zero pollution into the street.  They're much quieter too.

And they're more manoeuvrable than trams, able to drive around obstructions without leaving the overhead lines.  If fitted with an auxiliary battery, trolleybuses can even leave the overheads entirely and operate like conventional buses over short distances.
