"Jonah, go to Nineveh!" came the message of the Lord,
"Go and cry against that place, I have seen their wickedness."
But Jonah rose up to run away, Jonah did not obey.

Off to Tarshish Jonah went, from the presence of the Lord,
Came to Joppa, and while there, found a ship and paid the fare.
He went down into the ship that day, quietly sailed away.

He went down to Joppa, down into the ship,
Jonah went away from God, and downward was the path he trod.

Then God sent a mighty storm, every sailor was afraid.
Threw their cargo overboard, each one praying to his god.
But Jonah down in the ship had gone, silently sleeping on.

Then the sailors realised Jonah was the guilty one.
"Throw me overboard" said he, which they did reluctantly.
And falling down to the waves went he, into the raging sea.

He went down to Joppa, down into the ship,
Down to get some sleep, down into the sea.
Jonah went away from God, and downward was the path he trod.
