This is a song about the presentation of Jesus in the temple, and the meeting with Simeon, as recorded in Luke 2:22-32. Although not normally thought of as such, this event is very much part of the Christmas story, because it took place between the birth of Jesus and the visit of the wise men.

Patiently the old man waits
For the word to be fulfilled.
Entering now the temple gates,
The parents with their tiny child.
Simeon took Him in his arms,
And gazing on Him said,
"Now, O Lord, I can depart in peace
My eyes have seen, my arms embraced,
The Holy One, Your Salvation,
Bringing light to every nation,
And the glory of Your people, Israel."

Simeon then to Mary said,
"This your child will be a sign;
He will be rejected by
So many in the course of time."
Simeon looks as they depart;
Contentment fills his heart.
"Now, O Lord, I can depart in peace
My eyes have seen, my arms embraced,
The Holy One, Your Salvation,
Bringing light to every nation,
And the glory of Your people, Israel."
